Was a bit nervous or untrusting at first, but my calls went thru. First time the wait was a bit long but their customer chat line on their page was helpful and put me at ease that I would receive my call. Wait I'm confused about this whole thing. I thought unemployment was run by the federal government? So NYS Department of Labor handles everything for New York residents? What if I worked in multiple states?
Each state runs its own unemployment program following federal guidelines. If you worked in multiple states, you typically file in the state where you worked most recently or where you earned the most wages.

This whole unemployment tax refund thing has been a disaster from the start. The government takes our money, then makes us jump through hoops to get it back. Eight months is ridiculous!!! They can process regular refunds in weeks but suddenly when it's THEIR mistake we have to wait forever.
I feel you on this one. The system is totally broken when it comes to getting money back from the government.

The separation notice mostly just confirms what you already know - your last day, reason for separation, etc. When you file online you'll answer questions about why you're no longer working and the NYS Department of Labor will verify with your employer. Don't wait - file immediately. Your benefit year starts the week you file, not when you separated from work.

ugh trying to call NYS Department of Labor to ask these questions is impossible!! I've been trying for days to get through and either get busy signals or get disconnected after waiting forever. Has anyone found a way to actually talk to someone there about which benefits to apply for?

been on unemployment 3 times over the years and honestly they dont really care which 'type' it is - you just file a claim and they determine if you qualify based on your work history and why you lost the job. the whole process is pretty straightforward once you get started
