Low unemployment can actually work in your favor if you're genuinely looking for work. More job openings means you'll have legitimate job contacts to report each week, which strengthens your weekly certification. Just make sure you're applying to positions that match your skills and experience level - don't just apply randomly to meet the quota.
honestly the whole system is ridiculous... you pay into unemployment insurance for years and then when you need it for a few weeks they find every excuse to deny you. meanwhile people game the system all the time and get benefits they shouldn't
The unemployment system is so frustrating to navigate, especially for situations like this that aren't black and white. I spent weeks trying to get through to NYS Department of Labor on the phone when I had questions about my claim status. Finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me actually reach an agent - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Sometimes you really need to talk to someone who can look at your specific situation rather than trying to figure it out from the website.
2019 feels like a lifetime ago honestly. I remember complaining about my job back then and my dad telling me to appreciate having steady work. Wish I'd listened lol. The unemployment rate might have been low but there were still plenty of us struggling to make ends meet even with jobs.
same here, 6 months unemployed and its rough out there. the numbers dont tell the whole story though, even when unemployment was low in 2019 wages were still garbage for most people

I had trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor by phone when I needed to check on my claim status after filing. If you run into the same issue, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me actually reach an agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.

•Is that like a paid service? I'm already broke which is why I need unemployment in the first place lol

•It's just for getting through to talk to someone at NYS Department of Labor when the lines are busy. Might be worth it if you run into issues with your claim.

File immediately but be prepared for potential delays in processing since it's been so long since your separation date. They might need additional verification or documentation to confirm your employment history and reason for leaving.
