just file anyway, worst they can say is no. i got approved when i thought i wouldnt because my boss was being a jerk about the whole thing
I had a similar issue with getting through to NYS Department of Labor about my overpayment questions. After weeks of busy signals and dropped calls, I found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that actually got me connected to a real person at NYS Department of Labor. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Might be worth checking out if you need to clarify anything about your overpayment before filing taxes.
How much does something like that cost? Seems like we shouldn't have to pay extra just to talk to someone at our own unemployment office
File your taxes for sure! I owed money back to unemployment too and my tax guy said it's totally separate. The worst thing you can do is not file because then you get in trouble with taxes AND unemployment. At least if you file your taxes you're only dealing with one government agency being mad at you lol
Keep certifying your weekly claims even while waiting for the decision. If you're approved, you'll get backpay for all the weeks you certified. The key is making sure you continue to meet the job search requirements during this time - NYS Department of Labor tracks this stuff closely now.
Speaking of economic worries, this reminds me of when I was laid off in 2008. Back then I was so stressed about everything - the housing market, unemployment running out, finding another job. But honestly the NYS Department of Labor benefits kept coming as long as I did my job search requirements and weekly certifications. The state unemployment fund is separate from federal monetary policy.
To directly answer your question - no, interest rate changes won't affect your current benefit amount or duration. New York's unemployment insurance is funded by employer taxes, not federal programs. Focus on continuing your job search and filing your weekly claims on time. The economic uncertainty is stressful but your existing claim should continue normally.

The most important thing is DON'T let your weekly claims lapse during the move! I made that mistake when I relocated and it took weeks to straighten out with NYS Department of Labor. Even if you're busy packing and moving, you have to file that weekly claim on time or you'll lose those weeks permanently.

This is exactly why the unemployment system needs to be modernized. Why should someone lose benefits just because they're trying to find better opportunities in a different state? The whole thing is bureaucratic nonsense.
