I had trouble reaching someone at NYS Department of Labor about payment delays last month. Ended up using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Was way easier than sitting on hold for hours trying to call myself.
As someone who's been through this exact situation, you need to be very specific in your appeal about what accommodations you need and how they're reasonable. Include examples of jobs you're qualified for that would provide those accommodations. The hearing officer needs to understand you're not unemployable, just need standard workplace modifications.
THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS A JOKE! They deny people left and right for disability stuff because they don't want to pay out benefits. I've seen so many cases where people get denied initially just to make them give up and not appeal. It's discrimination plain and simple but they hide behind their bureaucratic processes.
just take the job and see what happens with your claim. worse case scenario you make more money working anyway. the unemployment system is so complicated nobody really understands all the rules
Congrats on getting a job offer! That's great news. Just make sure when you do your weekly certification you answer 'yes' to working that week and report your gross earnings before taxes. The system will automatically calculate your partial benefit. You'll probably end up with more total income combining the part-time wages and reduced unemployment than just unemployment alone.
The NYS Department of Labor system is a joke honestly. Whether unemployment is up or down, they find ways to make everything complicated. I've been dealing with them for months over an overpayment issue that makes no sense.

Same here with the reduced spending. My unemployment ran out last month and now I'm on standby status while looking for work. The economic impact is real - my local coffee shop closed because too many regular customers like me can't afford $5 lattes anymore.

totally feel this. unemployment benefits help but they're not meant to maintain your previous lifestyle. i had to move back with my parents because even with benefits i couldn't afford my apartment
