I had no idea about this when I was filing my claim last year. The whole funding structure is pretty complex. Makes me wonder how they determine when federal emergency funding kicks in for states.
If you're dealing with interstate issues, you might need to talk directly to someone at NYS Department of Labor to understand how the federal coordination affects your specific claim. I had a similar situation and couldn't get clear answers from the automated system. I ended up using claimyr.com to actually reach a real person - they have a service that gets you through to agents without waiting on hold forever. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Really helped me get the specifics sorted out.
The system is so messed up. They expect people to choose between keeping their job and taking care of their kids. I got fired for similar reasons and it took MONTHS to get my benefits sorted out. Even when I won my appeal, they made me jump through so many hoops. Just be prepared for a fight if they deny you initially.
The system is so messed up! Workers comp barely covers anything and then they tell you that you can't get unemployment either. How are people supposed to survive? I was in a similar situation two years ago and ended up having to borrow money from family just to keep my apartment.
One thing to consider - if your doctor clears you for light duty or restricted work and your employer can't accommodate those restrictions, that might change your eligibility. At that point you could potentially file for unemployment since you'd be able and available for work that matches your restrictions. But definitely get clarification from NYS Department of Labor before filing anything.
I've been tracking this because I'm in HR and need to stay on top of labor market trends. New York's unemployment rate in early 2025 has increased by about 0.4 percentage points compared to the same period last year. It's not dramatic, but it's noticeable. The NYS Department of Labor data shows most of the increase is in manufacturing and retail sectors. If you're in a stable industry like healthcare or government, you're probably fine.
I work in logistics for a mid-size company. Not sure if that counts as stable these days with all the supply chain changes.
When I was trying to get through to NYS Department of Labor last month about my claim status, I used a service called Claimyr that helped me actually reach someone. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me hours of busy signals and might be helpful if you need to contact them about unemployment benefits.
The whole system is rigged anyway. They manipulate these numbers to make politicians look good. I've been unemployed since November and the NYS Department of Labor keeps finding excuses to delay my payments. Half the people I know who lost jobs aren't even counted in the statistics because they gave up looking or are doing gig work.

THE SYSTEM IS SO BROKEN!!! They disqualify people left and right and then make it impossible to reach anyone to fix it. I've been fighting a disqualification for months and still no resolution. They act like we're all trying to scam the system when most of us just need help after losing our jobs.

•I feel you on this. The whole process is so stressful when you're already dealing with job loss.

Quick question - are you still able to log into your my.ny.gov account and see your claim details? Sometimes the online portal will show more specific information about why you were disqualified than what's in the letter.
