Was a bit nervous or untrusting at first, but my calls went thru. I'm trying to figure out the basic rules for when someone can actually file for unemployment in New York. My hours got cut down to almost nothing at my retail job and I'm not sure if I qualify yet or if I need to wait until they officially lay me off. I've been working there for about 8 months but now I'm only getting like 10 hours a week which isn't enough to pay my bills. Can I apply for partial unemployment or do I have to be completely unemployed first? Also wondering about the job search requirements and if there's a waiting period before benefits start.

wait so you can work part time and still get unemployment?? i thought you had to be completely unemployed! this changes everything for me because my restaurant cut everyone's shifts but didnt lay anyone off

Yes! A lot of people don't know about partial benefits. As long as your hours/wages were reduced involuntarily, you can apply. Just make sure to report all your earnings when you file your weekly claims.

Just be prepared for the process to take forever. I applied for partial benefits 3 weeks ago and my claim is still in adjudication. The NYS Department of Labor system is so backed up it's ridiculous. But yes you should definitely apply if your hours got cut.

I just got laid off from my construction job last month and filed for unemployment with NYS Department of Labor. My friend told me I can get benefits for like 6 months but I'm seeing different info online. How long does unemployment actually last in New York? I'm trying to figure out my budget and need to know exactly how many weeks I can collect. Also do I need to do anything special to keep getting payments or does it just automatically continue? Really stressed about this whole situation.

Just to add some specifics - the 26 weeks is your benefit year. If you exhaust all 26 weeks and still haven't found work, you can't just file a new claim right away. You'd need to work again and earn enough wages to qualify for a new benefit year. The weekly job search requirement is 3 activities minimum and you need to keep a log of your search efforts in case NYS Department of Labor asks for it during an audit.

26 weeks if youre lucky and they dont find some reason to cut you off early. ive seen people get disqualified for the stupidest reasons. system is designed to deny benefits not help people

NYS Department of Labor claim shows 'exhaustee' status - what does this mean for my benefits?

My unemployment claim status changed to 'exhaustee' this week and I'm not sure what this means. I've been collecting benefits for about 20 weeks now and was doing my weekly claims like normal. Now when I log into my.ny.gov it shows this exhaustee status and I can't file a new weekly claim. Did I do something wrong? Am I cut off from benefits completely? I still haven't found a job and really need these payments to continue.

The whole system is designed to confuse people and make you give up. They use terms like 'exhaustee' instead of just saying 'your benefits are done.' It's deliberate obfuscation to save the state money.

honestly the whole system is designed to make you paranoid. they want you to think someones always watching so you dont try to cheat. but really theyre too understaffed to be calling every employer every week for every claim

My position as a data entry clerk was eliminated last month when my company implemented an AI system that could process invoices automatically. I've been filing my weekly claims with NYS Department of Labor but I'm really struggling to find new work because it seems like every entry-level office job I look at is being replaced by similar technology. The whole system is broken if you ask me. Companies get tax breaks for automating jobs but there's no real support for workers who get displaced. Sure NYS Department of Labor will pay your benefits for a few months but then what? Most retraining programs are outdated by the time you finish them because technology moves so fast.

UPDATE: Just wanted to thank everyone for the advice. I contacted Workforce One and they have a specific program for workers displaced by technology. It includes career counseling and connections to employers who are specifically hiring people to work alongside AI systems rather than being replaced by them. Still filing my weekly claims but feeling more hopeful about finding something sustainable.
