The whole system is BROKEN BY DESIGN!! They make it nearly impossible to get through because they don't want to pay people. I've been dealing with NYSDOL for 3 months and spent probably 40+ hours just trying to get through to a person. It's dehumanizing and cruel to people who are already struggling. They know exactly what they're doing!
UPDATE: I finally got through! I ended up using Claimyr this morning after trying for an hour on my own with no luck. Got connected to an agent in about 20 minutes and they fixed my issue right away - turns out there was a verification flag on my account that they quickly removed. My payment should be processed in 3 business days. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions!
Great news! Glad to hear you got it resolved. Just as a heads-up for future reference - once your claim is established and running smoothly, you can also use the secure message system in your NY.gov account for less urgent matters. The response time is usually 3-5 business days, but it's another way to communicate without phone calls for simple questions.
I'm in a similar situation and called the NY unemployment help desk about ID.me issues. They told me that even though ID.me is a third-party service, NYSDOL can sometimes override verification issues if you can prove your identity directly to them. The representative suggested sending a secure message through the unemployment portal with clear photos of your identification documents. Include your claimant ID and a brief explanation of the ID.me issues you're having. This worked for me after 3 failed attempts with ID.me. Key point though: Document EVERYTHING. Save screenshots of error messages, note the dates/times you attempted verification, and record any reference numbers from ID.me. This documentation strengthens your case if they question why you couldn't file sooner.
This is really helpful information! I'll keep this in mind if I run into any more issues. I did take some screenshots of the error messages I was getting, so I have those saved just in case.
my cousin works at nysdol and says they're getting TONS of id.me complaints lately. apparently there was a system update in October that made it more strict. try checking the NY unemployment twitter or facebook - sometimes they post workarounds when lots of people have the same problem
Just wanted to update - I used Claimyr this morning and got through to an agent who confirmed they're having major issues with the appeals portal. They're actually aware of the problem and said they're working on it, but no ETA for a fix. The agent was able to note in my file that I attempted to file online multiple times before the deadline.
That's good to know! I might try this service if I can't get through on the phone tomorrow. Did they give you any confirmation number or email after handling your appeal?
UPDATE: NYSDOL just announced they're extending all appeal deadlines by 14 days due to the technical issues with their portal. Check your email or message inbox on your NY.gov account for the official notification. This should give you some breathing room while they fix the system.
OMG THANK YOU!!! I just checked my inbox and got the notification about the extension! What a relief. Still going to try to submit ASAP but at least I'm not about to miss the deadline.
One more important thing - while working on your unemployment appeal, immediately apply for emergency assistance benefits through HRA. You may qualify for emergency cash assistance, SNAP benefits (food stamps), and emergency rental assistance even while your unemployment is under appeal. Many people don't realize these programs exist separately from unemployment insurance. Visit ACCESS HRA online or go to your local HRA office in person - tell them you have a 4-year-old and are facing homelessness, and they should expedite your case. This can provide a financial bridge while your unemployment appeal is being processed.
Just applied for emergency assistance online! They said we qualify for expedited SNAP benefits that should be available within 5 days. Also have an appointment tomorrow morning for emergency cash assistance. This might be enough to keep us in our apartment until the appeal goes through. Can't thank you enough for this advice.
That's great news about the emergency assistance! Regarding your unemployment appeal, make sure to specifically mention in your appeal that you had two employers and suspect one may not be showing in the system. Request a "wage investigation" as part of your appeal. This triggers a separate process where they contact the employer directly to verify your employment. Also, when providing documentation, include your first and last paystubs from BOTH employers, as this proves the duration of employment clearly. For the LQ-510 code specifically, they're looking at whether you earned at least $3,100 in your base period and worked in at least two calendar quarters. With 18 months of work history, you should easily meet this unless your wages were very low.
Just found pay stubs from both jobs and my W-2s. Will definitely request that wage investigation. You've all been incredibly helpful - I went from feeling completely hopeless this morning to having a solid plan now. Will update once I hear something about the appeal.

Here's what's actually happening with the "release" situation: When a NYSDOL representative tells you they just need to "release" your payment, they're referring to removing a temporary system hold. These holds can happen for various legitimate reasons: - Identity verification checks (especially if you've recently updated any personal information) - System flagging patterns that require manual review - The October 2025 system migration that affected many accounts - Break-in-claim verification requirements The frustrating part is that these holds require manual intervention - there is no automatic resolution after a certain timeframe. And with the current call volume, many legitimate claims are stuck in limbo. I recommend: 1. Continue trying to call early morning (7:55am) and be ready to hit redial repeatedly 2. Use the secure message system with very specific subject lines ("Payment Release Request - Claim #XXXX") 3. Contact your state representative as another commenter suggested 4. Document everything for potential interest penalties (NYS does pay interest on long-delayed benefits in some circumstances) This system-wide issue should improve by late December according to the latest NYSDOL communications.

•Thank you for the detailed explanation! I'll definitely use that specific subject line for my next message. Do you think I'd qualify for interest since it's been over 4 months? And is there anything specific I should say when I actually get through to an agent to make sure they completely fix the issue?

•Yes, at 4+ months you'd likely qualify for interest payments, but you'll need to specifically request it once your base issue is resolved. When you do reach an agent, ask these specific questions: 1. "What specifically is causing the payment hold on my account?" 2. "Is there any additional information you need from me to release ALL pending payments?" 3. "Can you verify there are no other issues that might delay payment after this is resolved?" 4. "What is the exact timeframe for receiving my payments once you process this?" 5. "Should I request interest payment now or through a separate process?" Get the agent's name and ID number if possible. This creates accountability and gives you a reference if you need to follow up again.

I finally got through to NYSDOL!!! Used Claimyr from the suggestions here and was connected to an agent in about 35 minutes (after trying for WEEKS on my own). The agent said there was a "verification hold" on my account from when I uploaded my ID back in August that never cleared properly. She removed it while I was on the phone and said all my back payments should process in 1-3 business days! Thank you all SO MUCH for the help - will update when the money actually hits my account. What a relief!!!

•Great news! This is exactly the kind of hold issue we've been seeing. Make sure to keep certifying weekly as normal, and if the payments don't arrive within 3 business days, document that and call back. Glad you got it resolved!
