Do employers pay unemployment benefits in NY - confused about how NYS Department of Labor funding works

I'm trying to understand how unemployment insurance actually works in New York. When I collect benefits from NYS Department of Labor, is my former employer directly paying for my weekly claims? My ex-boss made some comment about how much my claim was going to 'cost him' and now I'm worried about applying. Does the employer have to write a check every week or something? I don't want to cause financial problems for the small business where I used to work, but I also need these benefits to survive while job hunting.

Your boss sounds like he's trying to make you feel bad for claiming benefits you're entitled to. That's manipulative behavior and you shouldn't feel guilty about filing. The unemployment system exists specifically for situations like yours.

How long to be approved for unemployment NYS Department of Labor - timeline unclear

Filed my initial unemployment claim with NYS Department of Labor three days ago after getting laid off from my warehouse job. The confirmation said my claim was received but I have no idea what to expect for timing. My friend said it took her forever but that was during COVID so maybe things are different now? I need to know how long to be approved for unemployment because I have rent due in two weeks. The my.ny.gov portal just shows 'claim under review' with no other details. Should I be worried that it's taking this long already or is this normal processing time?

Just want to say hang in there! I know waiting is stressful especially with bills coming up. The good news is that if you get approved, your benefits will be backdated to when you first filed. So even if it takes a few weeks, you'll still get paid for this waiting period.

The system has been around since the 1930s and it's one of the few government programs that's actually mostly self-funding through employer contributions rather than general tax revenue. NYS Department of Labor manages the state fund but the structure is similar across all states.

How to reduce unemployment benefit amount - NYS Department of Labor weekly claim issue

I'm getting more unemployment benefits than I think I should be and I'm worried about getting an overpayment notice later. My weekly benefit amount is $504 but I think it should be lower based on my previous wages. I worked part-time for most of 2024 and my highest quarter was only around $8,200. When I check my monetary determination on the NYS Department of Labor website, something seems off with the calculations. Has anyone had luck getting their benefit amount reduced to avoid future problems? I don't want to end up owing money back to the state.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS BROKEN! They can't calculate benefits correctly but they sure can demand money back fast enough. I've been fighting an overpayment for 6 months and they just keep sending threatening letters.

wait are you sure you're even supposed to get less? maybe your calculation is right and you're worrying for nothing. the NYS Department of Labor uses your highest earning quarter times 26 or something like that

It's actually your high quarter wages divided by 26, with a maximum weekly benefit rate. If their high quarter was only $8,200, their weekly benefit should be around $315, not $504. There's definitely an error somewhere.

I'm trying to understand which type of unemployment I qualify for with NYS Department of Labor. I got laid off from my retail job last month when the store closed permanently, but I'm confused about the different categories I keep seeing mentioned in the paperwork. Can someone explain what are the four different kinds of unemployment and the characteristics of each? I want to make sure I'm filing under the right category when I submit my weekly claims. The NYS Department of Labor website mentions different types but doesn't really break down what makes each one different or how they affect your benefits.

Just to add - if your store closure was part of a mass layoff (20+ people), there might be additional WARN Act notifications that could affect your timeline. But for the basic four types, you're definitely structural unemployment which is the most straightforward for NYS Department of Labor claims.
