If you're having trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor for any unemployment questions while working on your paper, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to agents by phone. Check out claimyr.com - they even have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Might be useful if you need to verify any current unemployment data for your research.
ugh this reminds me of how IMPOSSIBLE it is to get through to NYS Department of Labor these days... like during WWII the government actually WANTED to employ people but now they make it so hard to even file your weekly claims properly. sorry not helpful for your paper but just frustrated with the whole system
LOW unemployment is actually BAD for people collecting benefits because employers get pickier and expect you to take any job even if it's terrible pay or not in your field. The whole system assumes if unemployment is low then anyone can find work which isnt true!!
I've been dealing with NYS Department of Labor for months trying to get through on their phone lines about my pending claim. If you need to actually talk to someone there, I found this service called Claimyr that basically calls them for you and gets you connected to an agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Saved me so much time and frustration compared to calling myself.
What about tax incentives for small businesses to hire? I keep hearing about these programs but when I apply for jobs at small companies they always say they can't afford to hire. Maybe if NYS Department of Labor had better coordination with economic development agencies? I just feel like there's disconnect between unemployment services and actual job creation policies.
education and retraining is key!!! I went back to school while on unemployment and NYS Department of Labor approved it under their training extension program. Now I have skills employers actually want. But not everyone knows these programs exist - they need better promotion

I had a nightmare trying to reach NYS Department of Labor to ask similar questions about my eligibility timeline. Spent hours on hold just to get disconnected. Finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me through to a real person at the unemployment office. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI. Was worth it just to get my questions answered directly instead of guessing.

•Interesting, never heard of that before. Did they help clarify your specific situation?

•Yeah, they helped me understand exactly when my benefits would start and what I needed to do. Much better than trying to navigate the phone system myself.

The whole system is frustrating honestly. Even when you're eligible they make you jump through so many hoops with the job search requirements and weekly certifications. But to answer your question - file immediately, don't wait.

•Agree the process is annoying but at least the payments help when you need them
