Was a bit nervous or untrusting at first, but my calls went thru. First time the wait was a bit long but their customer chat line on their page was helpful and put me at ease that I would receive my call. Based on what you described, you should definitely qualify for regular unemployment benefits. Eight months of full-time work should give you enough wages in your base period. The key things NYS Department of Labor looks at are: 1) You lost your job through no fault of your own (layoff qualifies), 2) You have enough wages in your base period, 3) You're able and available to work. File your claim as soon as possible because there's a waiting week and delays in the system.
my sister went through this same thing at her warehouse job!! she said the regular unemployment was pretty straightforward to get once she figured out the NYS department of labor website. took like 3 weeks to get her first payment though so definitely apply right away. also make sure you save all your paperwork from your employer about the layoff

wait so if I worked a few days last month and forgot to report it on one of my weekly claims, am I going to have to pay everything back?? I just remembered I did some temp work and didn't put it on the certification...
You won't have to pay back everything, but you'll need to report that work ASAP. Call NYS Department of Labor or update your claim online. They'll calculate any overpayment for just those specific weeks where you should have reported the work. Better to fix it now than wait for them to find out.

I've been trying to get through to NYS Department of Labor for weeks to ask about my remaining balance and keep getting disconnected. The phone system is impossible! Has anyone found a way to actually reach a real person? I'm worried I'm missing something important about my claim duration.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!! I've been waiting 8 weeks and they keep saying 'processing' with no timeline. Meanwhile bills are piling up and I can't get anyone to tell me what's actually happening with my claim. NYS Department of Labor acts like they're doing us a favor when this is INSURANCE WE PAID INTO!!!

btw make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even while it's pending, otherwise you might miss out on back pay when it finally gets approved
