Was a bit nervous or untrusting at first, but my calls went thru. NYS Department of Labor - what is natural unemployment and how does it affect my claim?

I'm confused about something called 'natural unemployment' that came up during my job search workshop with Workforce One. The counselor mentioned it when explaining why there are always some people unemployed even when the economy is good. Does this concept affect my NYS Department of Labor claim in any way? I've been on UI for 6 weeks now and wondering if this is considered 'normal' unemployment or if there's something different I should be doing. My weekly claims have been going through fine but I want to make sure I understand all the terminology being thrown around.

I think I learned about this in college economics but forgot most of it lol. Sounds like its just background info about unemployment rates in general, not something that affects individual claims

The whole 'natural unemployment' thing is just economist speak for 'some people will always be out of work and that's normal.' Meanwhile those of us actually dealing with unemployment are just trying to pay our bills and get through the NYS Department of Labor bureaucracy! At least your weekly claims are processing smoothly - that's what really matters for keeping your benefits coming.

NYS Department of Labor unemployment stats - why aren't non-job seekers counted?

I've been trying to understand something about unemployment statistics and NYS Department of Labor reporting. My brother has been out of work for 8 months but stopped looking because he's going back to school in the fall. When I check the official unemployment numbers, it seems like people in his situation aren't being counted even though they're clearly unemployed. Does anyone know why the NYS Department of Labor and other agencies exclude people who aren't actively job searching from their unemployment figures? It makes the numbers seem artificially low to me.

For what it's worth, economists do track broader measures that include discouraged workers and people who are marginally attached to the labor force. The problem is these don't get reported as prominently. Your brother would likely show up in measures like U-6 which includes people who want work but haven't searched recently.

Does unpaid maternity leave qualify for unemployment benefits in New York?

I'm currently on unpaid FMLA maternity leave and my employer told me I can't return until mid-February. My leave started in December and I'm not getting any pay during this time. the whole system is ridiculous. you pay into unemployment your whole career but when you actually need help during maternity leave they say no. meanwhile men can collect benefits if they get laid off but new mothers get nothing. makes no sense!

I understand the frustration, but unemployment insurance is specifically for people who lose their jobs involuntarily and are actively seeking new work. That's why there are separate programs like PFL for family situations.
