Make sure he's documenting his job search activities properly in case they ask for that later. NYS Department of Labor requires 3 work search contacts per week and they need to be logged in the system. Also, if his employer contests the claim or doesn't respond quickly, that can definitely cause these long delays. The adjudication process is supposed to investigate all aspects of the separation to make sure he's eligible for benefits.
He's been keeping track of his job applications but didn't know about logging them in the system. Where does he do that exactly?
wait why does adjudication take so long anyway?? seems like they could just check if you got fired or quit and approve it
Adjudication involves verifying employment history, reason for separation, wages earned, and sometimes conducting interviews with both you and your former employer. It's not just a simple approve/deny decision - they need to ensure all information is accurate before determining benefit eligibility and amount.
If you're dealing with unemployment claims yourself and having trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor agents, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to them faster. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Really helped when I needed to check on my claim status last month.
The automatic stabilizer thing is just academic nonsense tbh. What matters is that you file immediately and don't let NYS Department of Labor jerk you around with delays and bureaucratic BS. The system isn't designed to help you, it's designed to make it hard to get benefits. File now and be prepared to fight for every dollar.
I remember learning about this in college! It's basically that unemployment benefits automatically increase government spending during recessions without Congress having to pass new laws. Pretty cool economic concept but yeah, doesn't change anything about how you file your claim with NYS Department of Labor.

The unemployment system is so broken anyway, doesn't matter what the rates are if you can't get decent paying jobs. I've been on and off UI for months because everything available pays less than my weekly benefit amount. It's ridiculous.

•I feel you on that. The job search requirements don't account for the fact that sometimes taking a low-paying job actually puts you in a worse financial position.

Just wanted to add that when you're looking at unemployment rates, also consider cost of living. A county with low unemployment might have super high rent that eats up any salary advantage. Good luck with your search!
