Was a bit nervous or untrusting at first, but my calls went thru. First time the wait was a bit long but their customer chat line on their page was helpful and put me at ease that I would receive my call. honestly the whole system is designed to make you jump through hoops. yeah unemployment is 'important' because it keeps people from becoming homeless but NYS Department of Labor makes it so complicated with all the job search logs and weekly questions. half the time their website crashes when you try to file anyway

The key factor is whether you're able and available for work. If your workers comp case involves total disability, you can't collect unemployment. But if you're cleared for modified or light duty work and your employer can't accommodate those restrictions, you might have options. You'll need medical documentation showing what work you can perform and proof that you're actively job searching within those limitations. The NYS Department of Labor will review your case individually.
This is exactly what happened to my brother. He was on workers comp but got cleared for light duty. His company couldn't accommodate him so he was able to file for unemployment while looking for jobs that matched his restrictions. Wait this is confusing me too because I thought workers comp was supposed to replace your wages? Why would you need unemployment on top of that? Seems like double dipping to me.
Workers comp typically only pays about 2/3 of your average weekly wage, so it's often much less than what you were earning. It's not double dipping if you're genuinely available for work within your medical restrictions and your employer can't accommodate you.

the unemployment rate is calculated by dividing unemployed people by the total labor force but like others said it doesnt count discouraged workers or people who gave up looking temporarily so its not the whole picture

reduction force basically means company downsizing, its the easiest type of claim to get approved since theres no question about why you lost the job
I got reduction force too when they closed my department but I'm still nervous about the job search requirements. Do I still need to do 3 work search activities per week even though it was clearly not my fault I lost my job?
Yes, you still need to meet all the ongoing eligibility requirements including job search activities. The reduction force classification just determines that your initial separation qualifies you for benefits - you still have to prove you're actively looking for work each week.

Just remember you need to do job search activities every week and keep a log. NYS Department of Labor requires proof of at least 3 work search contacts per week. They can ask for your job search log at any time and if you don't have it, they can disqualify you and demand repayment of benefits.
