This entire system is designed to be confusing on purpose I swear. There's no reason why they need 800 different codes and notices that all mean slightly different things.
Don't forget that you MUST continue making your scheduled payments even after they take your refund. The refund offset doesn't replace your monthly payments - it just reduces the overall balance. Missing a payment could cause your installment agreement to default.
Thanks for this reminder - I might have assumed I could skip a payment or two after they take the refund.
I don't want to freak you out, but we had this happen at our office and YES, many of our other clients had their refunds delayed. About 30% of our clients had to go through additional identity verification, and about 10 had their refunds held completely pending review. It was a complete nightmare that lasted almost the entire tax season. We ended up having to compensate some clients for the delays.
This literally happened to me with TWO clients last year. I was FREAKING OUT. Called the IRS taxpayer advocate service but was on hold for like 5 hours before getting disconnected. Finally used Claimyr.com to get a callback from an actual competent agent who helped me through the whole process. They had me submit documentation proving the clients authorized the returns, and actually expedited verification for my other clients so their refunds wouldn't be delayed too long. Talking to that agent directly instead of waiting weeks for letters was the only way I got this resolved quickly.
Yes but it was worth every penny to get immediate help rather than spending weeks in bureaucratic hell. The IRS agent I spoke with knew exactly what to do with my situation.
whatever you do, DONT CALL THE IRS ABOUT THIS YET. they wont do anything until 5 business days have passed since your deposit date. just wait until next week, it'll probably show up. the system is just backed up.
I just went thru this! It took 2 weeks and 3 days from when I verified until it showed up in my transcript. Then another week for the refund to hit my account. The system is SO SLOW.
Have either of you tried calling them? Sometimes there's an issue that doesn't get resolved automatically and you need to talk to someone.
Been trying to call every day but can never get through. Might try that Claimyr thing someone mentioned above.
Keep an eye on your transcript for code 971. That's the notice they sent you. Then look for code 570 which is a hold on your account. When you see code 571, that means the hold was released after verification. Then you'll see 846 which is your refund issued date! š

The IRS has a special number for resolving issues like this: 1-800-829-1040. Good luck getting through though, I spent WEEKS trying. Finally used claimyr.com and had an agent on the phone same day who confirmed it was a substitute return situation. The agent helped me understand exactly what I needed to do to fix it. Totally worth it considering how much money was at stake.

ā¢Is this the thing where they wait on hold for you and then call you back? My cousin mentioned something similar

ā¢Yep exactly! They navigate the phone system and wait on hold, then call you when an agent is available. Saved me hours of frustration.

yoooo i had almost the EXACT same issue. the irs filed a SFR for 2018 saying i owed like $7k. turns out when u don't file they just make up numbers that benefit them not u. after i filed properly it dropped to like $600 which i could manage. def do not ignore this!! it won't go away and will just get worse with penalties and interest
