KEEP COPIES OF EVERYTHING! And send it certified mail so you have proof of when you mailed it. The IRS has "lost" my mail before.
dont worry lol the IRS is running on computers from the 1960s using programming languages that nobody knows anymore. prior year returns might as well be processed by carrier pigeons for how slow they are š¦
Not sure if anyone else mentioned it, but make sure you're not using a public wifi network when attempting to access the IRS site. They have security measures that might block access from public networks.
I gave up on the website and just went to my local IRS office in person. Waited about an hour but walked out with my transcript printed. If your mortgage deadline is coming up fast, this might be your best bet.
One thing no one mentioned - there are different TYPES of transcripts that show different things: - Tax Return Transcript: shows most line items from your original tax return - Tax Account Transcript: shows changes, payments, penalties, etc - Record of Account: combination of both above - Wage & Income Transcript: shows all your W-2s, 1099s, etc Make sure you get the right one for what you need!
This is super helpful! I didn't realize there were different types. I think I need the Account Transcript since I'm trying to check if my payment was received.
Yep! Tax Account Transcript is perfect for tracking payments. Look for code 570 for the payment posting and 971 for notices about it.
the irs site is literally the WORST. crashed on me 3 times during verification last month. keep trying tho, eventually worked on like the 4th attempt š

The only thing that worked for me was the Taxpayer Advocate Service. Had to wait 3 weeks for an appointment but they resolved it same day once I got in front of them.

Quick question - are you trying to verify through the "Get Transcript" system or through the Identity Verification Service? They're two different things with different processes.

ā¢It's the Identity Verification Service. After I e-filed they sent me a message saying I needed to verify my identity before they would process my return.

ā¢Ok that's the right one then. Just wanted to check because sometimes people confuse the two systems. Unfortunately the mailed code is your only option unless you go through TAS or congressional rep as others have suggested.
