I think we can all agree that ANY situation involving Washington ESD is pretty much the worst case scenario. Whether it's adjudication, appeals, overpayments, or just trying to file a basic claim, the system seems designed to make people give up. The fact that we're all here comparing horror stories says everything about how broken it is.
After reading all these responses, I'm convinced that the worst type of unemployment situation is whatever one you're currently stuck in. They all suck in their own special way, and Washington ESD seems determined to make every process as difficult as possible. Thanks for sharing your experiences everyone - at least now I know I'm not alone in this mess.
this has been really helpful. i was worried i wasnt going to get much but sounds like washington actually has pretty good unemployment benefits compared to other places
One last thing to mention - remember you still have to meet all the job search requirements even if you're getting the maximum benefit. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week and you have to keep a log of what you did.
Look into temporary assistance programs while you're waiting for this to get resolved. United Way has resources for emergency help with utilities and rent. Don't wait until you're completely broke to ask for help.
been getting unemployment for 2 months now and the weekly amount covers my rent and utilities but not much else. budget carefully and apply for everything you qualify for
The benefit amount calculation can seem complicated but Washington ESD customer service can walk you through it if you can get through to them. I finally reached an agent last week using some callback service and they explained exactly how my amount was calculated.

Thanks everyone for all the helpful info! I feel like I understand the Washington ESD requirements much better now. Hopefully I won't need to use this knowledge but it's good to know where I stand.

•Glad we could help clarify things! The Washington ESD system is complex but once you understand the base period concept it makes more sense.

•And remember if you ever need to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD, services like Claimyr can save you a lot of time and frustration with the phone system.

just wanted to add that if you're close to qualifying you might want to wait and work a bit longer to get a higher benefit amount since its based on your earnings

•That's a good point, though hopefully I won't be in a situation where I'm choosing when to get laid off!
