Was a bit nervous or untrusting at first, but my calls went thru. First time the wait was a bit long but their customer chat line on their page was helpful and put me at ease that I would receive my call. just keep calling the regular number early in the morning like 8am exactly when they open you'll get through eventually
I've tried calling at 8am sharp multiple times and still get the busy signal or get disconnected after waiting on hold for an hour. The system is just overwhelmed.

been unemployed 3 times in the last 10 years and yeah it never gets easier emotionally. the money stress + feeling useless is a brutal combo
One thing that helped me was remembering that unemployment benefits exist because this happens to LOTS of people - it's not a personal failure. The whole system exists because losing your job is a normal part of the economy, not because you did something wrong.

The whole base period system is ridiculous if you ask me. Why can't they just look at your recent earnings like any normal person would expect?? I had to wait months for my claim because they kept saying my base period wages weren't sufficient even though I was making good money at my new job. It's like they WANT to deny people benefits.
I understand the frustration, but the base period system is designed to ensure you have a substantial work history before becoming unemployed. It prevents people from working just briefly and then collecting benefits.

ugh the whole system is so confusing!! why can't they just make it simple and pay everyone the same amount based on cost of living or something

My economics professor back in college explained it like this - imagine if every parking spot in the city was always full. Nobody could ever go anywhere new because there would never be a place to park when they got there. Same thing with jobs - you need some 'empty spots' so people can move around and the economy can grow and change.

This reminds me of when I was on unemployment a few years ago and my cousin kept saying 'just get any job' but I was holding out for something in my field. Took 4 months but I found a much better position than if I had just grabbed the first thing available. Maybe that's part of what economists mean - people need time to find the RIGHT job not just ANY job?

•Yeah that's a good point. I'm doing the same thing now - I could probably get hired at a fast food place tomorrow but I'm trying to find another manufacturing position that pays decently. The NYS Department of Labor job search requirements actually encourage looking for suitable work in your field first.
