Was a bit nervous or untrusting at first, but my calls went thru. First time the wait was a bit long but their customer chat line on their page was helpful and put me at ease that I would receive my call. NYS Department of Labor unemployment who qualifies - confused about eligibility requirements

I'm trying to figure out if I qualify for unemployment benefits through NYS Department of Labor but the eligibility info online is confusing me. I worked part-time for 8 months at a retail job making about $18/hour, then got laid off last week. Before that I had a different job for about 6 months. Do I have enough work history? Also what counts as being 'able and available' for work? I can work any shift but I don't have a car so I'm limited to jobs I can get to by bus. Does that disqualify me? Really stressed about this whole process and not sure if it's even worth applying.

That's not correct - part-time workers can qualify for UI benefits as long as they meet the earnings requirements. You might want to reapply or appeal if you were denied incorrectly.

I'm trying to understand all the different reasons why unemployment claims get denied by NYS Department of Labor. My friend just got a denial letter and I want to make sure I don't make the same mistakes when I file next month. From what I've heard, there are tons of ways they can reject your claim but nobody seems to explain what the most common ones are. Can someone break down the main reasons people get their unemployment benefits denied? I'd rather know upfront what to watch out for.

dont forget about the work search thing!!! you have to apply for jobs every week and keep records or they'll cut you off. i know people who got denied retroactively because they couldn't prove they were looking for work

The whole system is designed to deny as many people as possible honestly. They make it confusing on purpose so people mess up their applications or miss deadlines. But if you follow all their rules exactly and document everything you should be ok

The unemployment system is designed to keep people stressed and relationships falling apart! They want you desperate so you'll take any crappy job. Meanwhile they make it impossible to actually get help when you need it. Your girlfriend should understand that this isn't your fault - the whole economy is rigged against working people.

I got laid off from my warehouse job in December but NYS Department of Labor just denied my unemployment claim saying I quit voluntarily. That would likely be considered misconduct, which is different from voluntary unemployment. Both can result in benefit denial but the appeal process and requirements are different.

My unemployment claim got denied last week and I need to appeal this decision but I'm completely lost on where to start. appeals are such a pain with this system!! took me 3 months to get mine resolved and they still messed up the paperwork twice. make copies of EVERYTHING you send them because they love to lose stuff

i think you just call them and tell them you want to appeal? thats what my friend did

No, you need to file it in writing either online or by mail. Phone calls don't count as official appeals.
