Was a bit nervous or untrusting at first, but my calls went thru. First time the wait was a bit long but their customer chat line on their page was helpful and put me at ease that I would receive my call. Also think about it this way - if unemployment was literally zero, workers would have ALL the power in negotiations. Companies couldn't fire anyone because they'd never find replacements. That might sound good but it would make businesses super inefficient and unable to adapt to changes in the market.
Good point! So unemployment benefits serve as a buffer that lets people take time to find jobs that actually match their skills instead of just grabbing the first thing available.

The unemployment system is so messed up!! They expect you to stay in jobs where you're being mistreated just so you can qualify for benefits. It's ridiculous that people have to choose between their mental health and being able to pay bills.
yeah my cousin quit her job and got unemployment but that was like 3 years ago so maybe things changed? not sure about the rules now
The rules haven't changed much, but each case is evaluated individually. Your cousin probably had documented good cause for leaving or the employer didn't contest the claim.

Yeah it worked for me. I was stuck in adjudication limbo for over a month and couldn't get anyone on the phone. Used their service and got connected within a day to someone who could actually see what was holding up my claim.

my friend filed unemployment and her old job didn't even contest it. i think most places just accept it unless they think you were fired for misconduct or something. the whole tax thing is calculated yearly anyway so its not like they get a bill the next day

File your claim! That's what the system is for. Your employer has been paying UI taxes all along specifically to cover situations like this. If you were laid off legitimately, there shouldn't be any drama. NYS Department of Labor handles everything and your employer just responds to their inquiry if they want to contest it.
