Also worth mentioning - if you're having trouble getting through to file by phone, try the online system first. It's usually faster and available 24/7. If you run into issues reaching NYS Department of Labor agents for questions, I recently used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to someone. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Really saved me time instead of calling dozens of times myself.
I get the theory but the NYS Department of Labor system is so broken that being unemployed feels more like punishment than economic flexibility. My adjudication has been pending for weeks with no explanation.
The key thing to remember is that while some unemployment is structurally necessary for a healthy economy, that doesn't mean individual unemployment isn't challenging. You're still dealing with real financial stress even if your situation serves a broader economic function.
Check your correspondence section in your online account first. NYS Department of Labor is required to send you a notice explaining any disqualification. If there's no notice, it could be a system error. You have 30 days from the date of determination to file an appeal if you disagree with the disqualification.
ugh the whole system is so confusing! why cant they just tell us what we did wrong instead of making us guess??
The whole system is a nightmare tbh. Even when you do everything right they find ways to delay your payments or question your eligibility. Just be prepared for a lot of bureaucratic BS and keep detailed records of everything you do.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO MAKE PEOPLE HOMELESS!!! They drag out adjudication on purpose hoping you'll just give up and disappear. I've been fighting NYS Department of Labor for 4 months over a disqualification that makes no sense. Lost my apartment, staying with friends now but that won't last forever. They don't care if we end up on the streets as long as they don't have to pay benefits.

•I feel you on the frustration but there are legitimate reasons for adjudication delays. The system isn't perfect but it's not intentionally trying to make people homeless.

You should also look into local food banks and churches that might offer emergency assistance. When I was waiting for my unemployment to process, the Salvation Army helped with a utility bill so I could keep more money for rent. Every little bit helps when you're in survival mode like this.
