Was a bit nervous or untrusting at first, but my calls went thru. Can I still apply for retroactive pandemic unemployment benefits from AOC's 2021 bill that covered Sept-Feb?

So I just saw something about AOC proposing a bill back in September 2021 to extend the pandemic unemployment insurance through February 2022, and making payments retroactive to Sept 6, 2021. Specifically, I found a tweet from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@RepAOC) from 12:44 PM on 9/16/21 posted via Twitter Web App that said: "We're introducing a bill to extend all federal pandemic unemployment insurance through Feb. 1. Benefits would be retroactive to Sep. 6. We can't let pandemic unemployment assistance lapse when we're still recovering from the cost effects of the pandemic." The tweet included a link to an article on bnnbloomberg.ca titled "Ocasio-Cortez Prepares Bill to Extend Unemployment Benefits -..." and had 293 Retweets, 58 Quote Tweets, and 1,280 Likes. I was laid off in August 2021 and couldn't find a job until December. I applied for regular unemployment but got denied because I didn't have enough work history with my last employer (only worked there for 4 months). I had no idea there were special pandemic programs I could've qualified for. Is there any way I can still claim those retroactive benefits now? The tweet specifically mentioned that "Benefits would be retroactive to Sep. 6" which would cover exactly the period when I was unemployed. I'm struggling financially and that money would help me catch up on bills I fell behind on. Has anyone successfully filed for retroactive benefits from 2021 recently? The article mentioned the benefits would be retroactive if approved, but I can't find any updates on whether the bill passed or not. Did AOC's effort to extend "all federal pandemic unemployment insurance through Feb. 1" actually become law?

Have you tried looking into other types of assistance? Maybe you qualify for something else? NY has rental assistance, utility help, food stamps, etc. Worth checking out at least.

Do I need to file a new NY unemployment claim for my 8 unpaid weeks?

I was laid off from my construction job back in August, and filed for unemployment right away. Everything was going fine for the first month - I got approved and started getting payments every week. Then in October, the payments just stopped coming with no explanation. I've been certifying every single week like clockwork, but haven't seen a dime for about 8 weeks now. When I check my payment history, those weeks show as "pending" with no other details. I tried calling the unemployment office like 50 times but can never get through to an actual person. The automated system just tells me my claim is still active until next June. So my question is - do I need to file a completely new claim to get these missing payments? Or should I just keep waiting and certifying? I'm getting desperate here as I've already burned through my savings and my landlord isn't exactly the patient type.

Hey just a heads up, I was in the same situation a month ago and it turned out to be a quarter change issue. If your claim spans from one quarter into a new one, sometimes the system automatically reviews your eligibility. Keep certifying and try to get a rep on the phone asap.

After 2 months of waiting, ny unemployment agent finally called - got all my backpay released!

After waiting almost 8 weeks with no payment and countless unanswered calls, a DOL agent finally called me yesterday! They went through my claim and found out there was some random flag on my account that was holding up everything. The agent was actually super nice and fixed it all while we were on the phone. Got all of my backpay for the past 7 weeks released at once. So apparently they ARE actually working on cases, just really slowly. Hang in there if your still waiting - there is hope! Don't give up trying to get through.

Been victim of fraud in the ny unemployment system, what now?

So I found out that someone has been claiming ny unemployment benefits using my identity for the past 4 months. I never even applied! My employer reached out to me last week asking why I filed for unemployment when I'm still working full-time. I was shocked and told them I definitely didn't file anything. I immediately checked my email and found notifications from NYSDOL about benefits being deposited that I never received. Looks like they've been paying around $580 weekly to some random bank account since August. I called the fraud department yesterday and waited over 2 hours before someone finally picked up. They told me they'd put a hold on the claim and flag it for investigation, but couldn't tell me how long it would take or what I need to do next. They also said I should contact the police and file a report, check my credit report, and freeze my credit. I'm freaking out because that's nearly $9300 stolen using my information! Has anyone dealt with this before? How long did it take to resolve? Will I need to pay this back somehow even though I never received the money?

This is why i dont even file for unemployment anymore even when I'm eligible. The system is so broken it's not worth the hassle. My identity was stolen 2 years ago and I'm STILL dealing with the aftermath. Good luck OP, ur gonna need it

Check if the scammer changed your address with USPS too! This happened to me - they filed a change of address form to redirect my mail. Had to go to the post office with ID to fix it. These scammers are thorough 😡

They tried to open credit cards but the freezes stopped them. Also check with your cell phone carrier - they sometimes try to port your number to get access to 2FA codes.

NY unemployment sent me a new benefit rate letter after applying for MEUC - didn't reapply for UI, what's happening?

My regular unemployment benefits expired about two weeks ago. Last week, I decided to apply for the Mixed Earner Unemployment Compensation (MEUC) program since I had some self-employment income alongside my regular job. I didn't reapply for standard unemployment at all - just submitted the MEUC application through the portal. Yesterday, I was surprised to receive a letter in the mail showing a new weekly benefit amount that's different from what I was getting before. The letter has a calculation based on my previous quarters and shows a new rate of $384 per week, which is about $45 more than I was getting previously. I'm really confused because I never submitted a new UI application - just the MEUC form. Has anyone experienced this? Does this mean my benefits are somehow continuing? The letter doesn't specifically mention MEUC anywhere, it just looks like a standard UI monetary determination letter. I'm not sure if I should start certifying again or what this actually means.

If your letter shows a new BENEFIT YEAR END date, then you've been approved for a new claim period. Check that date carefully - it should be about a year from now if it's a new claim, or the same as your previous benefit year end date if it's just an extension.

Just checked and the benefit year end date is April 2024, which is about a year from now. My previous one ended in March 2023, so I guess this really is a new claim? But I never applied for one...
