I'm dealing with this exact problem right now! My husband actually drove to Albany to the main office to pay in person because we were so paranoid about mail issues. Extreme solution but we got a receipt on the spot so 🤷♀️
NY unemployment is such a joke. They overpaid me, then took 5 MONTHS to cash the check I sent back. Meanwhile they kept sending threatening letters saying I hadn't paid! Make sure you keep DETAILED records of everything.
IMPORTANT INFO: 'Return to work' is a specific term in the unemployment system that means you are now regularly employed. One hour of orientation/paperwork is NOT considered 'returned to work' - you should report the hour and earnings but answer NO to that question until you begin your regular work schedule.
claimyr.com worked better for me than trying to go in person. Got me to a live agent who could actually help.
I'm confused...is this adjustment happening automatically or do we need to file an amended return? I paid taxes on about $22,000 in unemployment last year.
It's automatic for the basic unemployment exclusion. You only need to file an amended return if the exclusion now makes you eligible for credits or deductions you couldn't claim before. With $22K in unemployment, you'd get an exclusion on just the first $12K of that.
ANYONE ELSE STUCK IN PENDING FOR MONTHS ON NY UNEMPLOYMENT? This tax refund is nice but I'm still fighting to get my regular benefits from 3 months ago! System is completely broken. Can't get anyone on the phone no matter how many times I call 😤
wait for real? i might have to try that. this is driving me insane and I'm about to be evicted if I don't get my backpay

Not gonna lie am jealous. They DECREASED mine by $3400 and when I called (after like 500 attempts) they said there was nothing they could do because the "system had recalculated" my eligiblity based on some formula. Like thanks for the explanation 🤡

•Did you request a hearing? You have the right to appeal any monetary determination!

Dude my coworker had this exact same thing happen!!! She freaked out thinking it was a mistake but then got a letter saying they had "recalculated her eligibility based on additional wage information" - I think they do this periodically. She just kept claiming like normal and it's been fine.
