I've been collecting unemployment since April and everything was fine, but today at 8:52 AM I received this strange email from ID.me saying I need to complete ID.me identity verification with a 'Trusted Referee' through video chat. The email has the subject line "Complete Your ID.me Identity Verification with a Trusted Referee" and it's really concerning me. The email says "We noticed you didn't complete your identity verification with ID.me. ID.me offers the ability to have a video chat with a Trusted Referee to help verify your identity. Once you are assigned a Trusted Referee, the video chat will take less than 10 minutes." What's weird is that the email mentions the Internal Revenue Service but I never started anything with them. It specifically says "If you would prefer to continue with the previous method you initiated at The Internal Revenue Service, please return to the The Internal Revenue Service site to continue your identity verification with ID.me." But I've never done anything with the IRS related to my unemployment! The email has a button labeled "Verify through a Trusted Referee" and includes this link: https://referee.id.me/en/supervised/attempts/b72ca408363446f0a2cffb253e7e1798/edit I'm really confused because my benefits have been coming in normally for like 9 months now without any issues. Why would I suddenly need to verify my identity through a video chat with someone? I'm worried this might be some kind of identity theft attempt but also don't want to lose my benefits if it's legit. The email is signed by "The ID.me Member Support Team" which seems official, but I still don't understand why they're referencing the IRS when I'm just collecting unemployment. Has anyone else gotten something like this? What should I do? Should I click that link and go through with the video verification or ignore it?
someone probably already said this but have you tried resetting your 2FA completely? go to account settings and look for security options, there should be a way to remove all verification methods and start over
pro tip: the id.me help chat is actually better than calling. go to id.me website (not through unemployment) and look for the chat option. still took me 30 mins in queue but they fixed my security key issue without video verification
Had the EXACT same problem back in February. Turns out my ID.me verification actually failed but the system never told me. When I finally got through to a person, they were able to see exactly what was wrong and help me fix it. Don't waste weeks waiting - find a way to talk to a human!
OMG I'm so tired of hearing about ID.me problems!!! Its literally on every unemployment forum. They need to fix this garbage system or go back to the old way. Too many people are suffering because of their crappy technology 😡
conspiracy theory much? 🙄 its just typical government inefficiency
nah man look at the stats! since they implemented id.me the number of people successfully getting benefits dropped like 22%. that aint a coincidence
Bad news: your tax preparer was wrong. That unemployment tax exclusion was only for 2020 unemployment benefits, not 2021. The American Rescue Plan that Biden signed in March 2021 only applied to the prior year's unemployment. All unemployment from 2021 is fully taxable. Your tax person should have known this!
Stop waiting and call them! After two months of waiting for answers about my refund, I finally used claimyr.com to get through to a real IRS agent - found out my return was missing a form and that's why it was delayed. Talking to a real person is the only way to get actual answers about your specific situation.
FYI - there is a seperate recertification phone number that sometimes works better than the main line: 1-888-209-8124. Follow the prompts for weekly certification issues specifically. It bypasses some of the regular call queues.
Tried that number and it still tells me I need to speak to a rep 😫 Then transfers me to the same endless hold loop
ugh im sorry! such a broken system. might be time to try one of those services that calls for you then. i heard claimyr.com works well.
check if you got an email about identity verification. my wife had the same issue and turns out they randomly selected her account for additional verification but the email went to her spam folder.

Whyyyy is the unemployment system such a dumpster fire?? I swear its designed to be confusing on purpose so people give up on getting their benefits. 😤

if this is from a T-Mobile connection as it shows at the top, be aware there's been phishing scams specifically targeting T-Mobile users lately too.
