Anybody know if this affects your credit score? My brothers went down 40 points when someone stole his identity
Unemployment fraud itself won't directly impact your credit score since unemployment benefits aren't reported to credit bureaus. However, if the identity thief has your personal information, they might use it for other types of fraud that could affect your credit. That's why it's important to place a fraud alert with the credit bureaus as soon as possible.
FINAL UPDATE: Just wanted to let everyone know this finally got resolved! It took about 3 weeks after I spoke with the DOL agent, but I received an official letter confirming I was a victim of identity theft. I submitted that to the tax department through their online portal, and my refund was released 5 days later. Money hit my account this morning - such a relief! If anyone else runs into this issue, definitely use Claimyr to get through to someone at DOL - it saved me so much time and frustration. And definitely follow the advice about freezing your credit and filing the FTC report. Thanks again everyone!
To clarify the tax situation with NY unemployment benefits: 1. Unemployment benefits are fully taxable income at both federal and NY state levels 2. If you opted to have taxes withheld from your weekly benefits (typically 10% federal and 2.5% state), those withholdings are credited toward your annual tax obligation 3. Your 1099-G form from NYSDOL shows the total benefits received and taxes withheld 4. Any refund would come through your normal tax filing process with the IRS and NY State Tax Department, not from NYSDOL directly 5. NYSDOL does sometimes issue retroactive payments if: - They determine your weekly benefit amount was calculated incorrectly - There was an adjudication decision in your favor - There was a system error that affected your payments These retroactive payments are separate from tax refunds and are related to the benefits themselves.
Just wondering - did you check all your email folders? My DocuSigns went straight to spam and I almost missed them! Nearly lost my mind when I found them sitting there for a week!
Have you tried the online message center in your NY.gov account? Sometimes sending a direct message through there about your hardship situation can trigger someone to look at your case. That's another thing that worked for me besides calling - I sent a message explaining my financial situation and mentioned I had been waiting X weeks already. Worth a shot while you're trying other methods too.
just wondering... if you've been certifying for 17 weeks with no money why did u wait so long to say something?
Just wanted to follow up - were you able to get through to anyone at NYSDOL? If you're still having trouble, remember that you can also try contacting your state assembly person's office. They often have dedicated staff for helping constituents with unemployment issues and can sometimes get faster responses than calling directly.
UPDATE: I finally got through today using the Claimyr service someone mentioned! It actually worked. Turns out there was a routing number error in my direct deposit info. One digit was wrong! The agent corrected it and said I should receive all back payments within 3-5 business days. They're also sending a corrected 1099-G. Such a relief! Thanks everyone for your help!

•That's unusual unless there was a specific reason for denial. If the agent already certified the weeks for you over the phone, it's very likely they've already verified you're eligible for those weeks. The review is more procedural at this point.

UPDATE: Just got an email that my payment was processed! The payment history now shows all 7 weeks as pending payment. Thanks everyone for your help and advice! Looks like it took exactly 5 business days from when I spoke with the agent.
