I had so much trouble getting through to anyone at NYS Department of Labor when my payment was delayed. Spent hours on hold just to get disconnected. Finally found this service called Claimyr that actually got me through to a real person in like 10 minutes. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI and their site is claimyr.com. Might be worth it if you need to talk to someone about payment issues.
I was in your exact situation last year and spent weeks trying to get through to NYS Department of Labor to understand my options. The phone lines are always busy and the website doesn't clearly explain what happens after regular benefits end. I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual agent who explained everything. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Turned out I wasn't eligible for any extensions, but at least I got a clear answer instead of wondering.
Both programs also have appeals processes if your claim gets denied. With UI you can appeal to NYS Department of Labor if they disqualify you, and with workers comp you can appeal through the Workers Compensation Board. The appeal procedures are different but both give you a chance to challenge negative decisions.
honestly the whole system is confusing... i never understood why we have so many different programs for when people cant work. seems like they could just have one program that covers everything
oh man these hearings are stressful!! i was so nervous during mine i could barely speak. just remember the judge is there to listen to both sides fairly. practice what youre going to say beforehand so you dont freeze up like i did
Whatever you do, don't let them twist your words. I went through this whole mess last year and my former employer tried to make it sound like I was being difficult when really they were violating labor laws. Stick to your timeline and don't let them derail the conversation. The burden is on them to prove misconduct or voluntary quit - if they can't do that convincingly, you should win the appeal.

The system is so confusing! I got unemployment when my restaurant closed permanently during covid but my friend got denied when she was fired from retail for 'attitude problems.' Sometimes it feels like they just pick and choose randomly.

•It's not random, but the line between fireable offense and misconduct can be blurry. Attitude problems might not rise to the level of misconduct unless it was really severe or documented.

Also remember you need to have earned enough wages during your base period and be able and available to work. They'll check your work history going back about 18 months to see if you meet the financial requirements.
