THE SAME THING HAPPENS EVERY TIME THERE'S A BIG ECONOMIC SHIFT! Government creates jobs during crisis then abandons workers when it's over. NYS Department of Labor probably uses the same playbook from 1919 - delay claims and hope people give up!
Interesting historical perspective! The post-WWI recession of 1920-1921 was brutal. Labor strikes were also a huge factor - when workers tried to maintain wartime wage levels, many industries just shut down operations temporarily. It's a reminder that unemployment systems need to be robust enough to handle sudden economic shifts.
I had such a hard time getting through to NYS Department of Labor when I was dealing with this transition. Spent hours on hold and kept getting disconnected. Finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Saved me so much frustration and I was able to get my questions answered about the disability to unemployment transition process.
honestly the unemployment system is such a mess anyway. even if you qualify for more money with unemployment good luck actually getting it paid out on time. disability at least comes regularly
wait is disaster unemployment the same as regular unemployment or do i get both? my cousin said something about getting extra money but im not sure if thats true
No, you can't get both. If you're eligible for regular UI benefits, you have to apply for those first. DUA is only for people who aren't eligible for regular unemployment - like self-employed people or those who don't have enough work history for regular benefits.
Same boat here - my restaurant got completely destroyed and we're all out of work indefinitely. I started my application yesterday and it was actually pretty straightforward once I found the right section on my.ny.gov. Just make sure you select 'disaster-related' when it asks about the reason for your job separation. They also asked for the FEMA disaster declaration number which I found on the FEMA website.
The whole NYS Department of Labor system is a JOKE! I filed online 3 weeks ago and my claim is still stuck in adjudication with no explanation. No one answers the phones, the website gives you no real information, and they expect you to just wait indefinitely while your bills pile up. This state doesn't care about working people at all!

The system is so broken! They make the definitions intentionally confusing so people mess up and get denied benefits. I've been dealing with NYS Department of Labor for months and still don't understand half their rules.

Been there! The basic meaning is you lost work through no fault of your own (layoffs, business closure, etc.) and you're actively looking for new employment. But there are tons of nuances depending on your situation.
