The whole system is broken honestly. My friend waited 8 weeks just to find out they needed one additional document that nobody told her about. Meanwhile people are struggling to pay bills and the NYS Department of Labor acts like it's no big deal. They make the process deliberately confusing so fewer people can actually get benefits.
Just to add - if you're approved, your first payment might be delayed because they send you a debit card first. You can set up direct deposit but that takes another few days to process. So even after approval, expect at least a week before money hits your account. Plan accordingly!
I had trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor to ask about retraining programs until I found claimyr.com - they help you get through to actual agents instead of waiting on hold forever. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Way easier than trying to call the regular number.
The NYS Department of Labor system is honestly confusing about this stuff. I spent forever trying to figure out which application to fill out. If you're having trouble getting through to them by phone (which you probably will), I used a service called Claimyr that helped me reach an actual agent. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI and the site is claimyr.com. Made the whole process way less stressful than sitting on hold for hours.
Just apply for regular unemployment insurance through my.ny.gov - that's what 99% of people need. Don't overthink it. The system will tell you if you're not eligible for something. I made the mistake of researching too much instead of just filing and it delayed my claim by weeks.
DON'T TRUST THE SYSTEM!!! They'll find any excuse to deny your claim or delay it for months. I've been fighting with NYS Department of Labor for over a year about an overpayment that makes no sense. They claim I owe them $2,800 but won't explain how they calculated it. Save every document and screenshot everything because they will change your information without telling you.

the system is rigged against part time workers!!! they make it impossible to qualify then wonder why people cant pay bills. meanwhile full time people get benefits handed to them

•I feel your frustration but there are good reasons for the wage requirements. It ensures the system has enough funding from employer taxes.

Also check with 211 (dial 2-1-1) for local assistance programs. They can connect you with food banks, utility assistance, and sometimes emergency cash help while you figure out the unemployment situation.
