The waiting period can be really tough financially. If you're worried about making rent, see if your state has any emergency assistance programs or if local nonprofits offer help with utilities and food while you're waiting for benefits to start.
I went through this exact situation two years ago. The key is to file your claim the first week your hours drop, keep detailed records of your job search activities, and be patient with the system. It's frustrating but it does work eventually.
About 3 weeks from when I filed, but that included the waiting week. Could have been faster if I hadn't made a mistake on my initial application that required correction.
That's actually pretty fast compared to some stories I've heard. Getting help from Claimyr to talk to someone at Washington ESD definitely sped up my process when I had questions.
this whole thread is depressing but helpful. at least now i know what to expect when my benefits run out
Final thought - make sure you understand the difference between your benefit year ending and exhausting your benefits. They're two different things and the rules are different for each situation.
Benefit year ending means you've reached the anniversary of when you filed. Exhausting benefits means you've used up all your available weeks or dollar amount. Different rules apply depending on which situation you're in.
This has been a great thread. Really shows how much misinformation is out there about unemployment benefits. OP made the smart move asking for real experiences instead of just going off assumptions.
Good luck with everything! The first time filing can feel overwhelming but you'll get through it. Most people's claims are approved without major issues as long as you're honest and follow the requirements.
Just to add one more resource - the Washington ESD website has a pretty comprehensive FAQ section that answers most common questions. Worth bookmarking for quick reference while you're going through the process.

Make sure you apply for PFML before your surgery if possible. There can be processing delays and you want to make sure everything is set up.

Hope your surgery goes well! At least now you know you're looking at the right program for income replacement during recovery.
