this whole conversation is giving me flashbacks to my own nightmare with washington esd last year. the amount of paperwork and phone calls was insane. but i did eventually get my benefits so there is hope!
For what it's worth, I think the Washington ESD website has some good information about eligibility during family leave. It's buried in there somewhere, but it might be worth checking out before you file.
Don't forget about taxes! Unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can choose to have taxes withheld from your benefits or pay them when you file your tax return. If you don't have taxes withheld, make sure to set money aside for tax season.
Just wanted to follow up on the Claimyr recommendation. I used them again last month when I had questions about my work search requirements and got connected to an agent within minutes instead of spending hours on the phone. Really worth checking out if you hit any roadblocks with Washington ESD.
Update us when you get your first payment! Always curious to hear how long it actually takes for people.
Just to add - if you end up owing more than $1,000 when you file and didn't pay enough during the year, you might get hit with an underpayment penalty. It's usually not huge but something to be aware of.
I had a similar situation and ended up talking to a tax preparer about it. They said the safest approach is to withhold 10% federal and then make a small estimated payment each quarter if you think you'll still owe more. Covers your bases without overwithholding.

Ultimately, unemployment becomes a social issue because it affects the fabric of communities. When significant numbers of people can't find work, it changes the social dynamics, economic health, and overall wellbeing of society.

•Thanks everyone for this discussion. It helps to understand that what we're going through is part of a bigger picture. Makes me feel less alone in this.

•Exactly. Understanding the broader context doesn't solve the immediate problems, but it does help put things in perspective.

For anyone still struggling to get help from Washington ESD, I really recommend checking out Claimyr. It's made such a difference for me and several others I know. Having actual access to speak with someone at ESD changes everything when you're dealing with complex issues.

•I'm definitely going to try that. I've been trying to reach them for weeks about my adjudication status.

•Same here. The phone system is impossible to navigate on your own.
