One more thing - if you move to a different state while receiving Washington unemployment, you might have to file tax returns in multiple states. Something to keep in mind if you're job searching in other areas.
Thanks everyone for all the info! This thread has been really helpful. I'm going to log into my Washington ESD account and elect the 10% withholding just to be safe.
Thanks everyone for all the helpful info! I feel way more confident about filing now. Going to start my application tonight and hopefully join the ranks of successfully collecting unemployment benefits soon.
The key thing to remember is that Washington ESD is required to pay you within a certain timeframe once your claim is approved. If there are unreasonable delays, you can file a complaint, but most issues resolve within 4-6 weeks max.
Final update: Got my first payment today, exactly 3 weeks and 2 days after filing! It included payment for all three weeks I had filed claims for. Thanks everyone for the advice and support!
been through this process twice now and the key is patience and documentation. keep records of everything, file your weekly claims religiously, and dont give up if you hit roadblocks. the system works but its slow
one last thing - if you get denied for any reason, you have 30 days to appeal. dont let that deadline pass if you think the decision was wrong. appeals take time but can be successful if you have good documentation
