Was a bit nervous or untrusting at first, but my calls went thru. First time the wait was a bit long but their customer chat line on their page was helpful and put me at ease that I would receive my call. The system really wasn't designed with the gig economy in mind. Hopefully they'll update the rules eventually to better reflect how people actually work now.
Agreed. So many people do mixed W-2 and contract work these days.
Some states are starting to look at portable benefits for contractors but Washington isn't there yet.

Washington ESD website says you can file a claim up to one year after becoming unemployed, but like everyone else is saying, you only get benefits from the date you file forward. So there's technically no hard deadline but practically you want to file ASAP.
One year seems like a weird rule. Who would wait that long?
People who don't know about unemployment benefits, or who think they're not eligible when they actually are.
The bottom line is file immediately. I've seen too many people on here regretting waiting. And if you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD about your claim, that Claimyr thing actually works - I was skeptical but they got me through to an agent in like 10 minutes when I'd been trying for weeks on my own.
Smart move. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Has anyone actually used all 26 weeks? I'm curious how common it is for people to need the full duration.
I came close during the 2008 recession - used about 24 weeks before finding work. It really depends on your industry and the job market. Some people find work quickly, others need more time.
I used all 26 weeks a few years ago. It was stressful but I'm glad the system gave me enough time to find a good job instead of just taking anything out of desperation.
One last question - does Washington ESD send you reminders as you get close to exhausting your benefits?

OP, based on what you've described (layoff, 2 years employment, no issues), you should definitely be approved. The process just takes time and Washington ESD doesn't give much feedback while they're processing. Hang in there!

One more thing - make sure your contact info is up to date in your account. Sometimes Washington ESD tries to reach people and can't get through, which can delay the process.
