Just wanted to add one more important point - if you do decide to quit, make sure you submit your resignation in writing (email is fine) and keep a copy. In the resignation, be specific about how the job differs from what was described during the hiring process. Something like "The position was described as [X] during the interview, but the actual duties are [Y]" or "The schedule was stated as [X] but has been changed to [Y] without prior agreement." This written record can be crucial evidence if UC questions your decision. Also, don't wait too long to quit if you're going to do it - the longer you stay, the harder it becomes to argue the conditions were unacceptable. Good luck!
This is such great advice about putting everything in writing! @Miguel Castro you re'absolutely right about the timing too - I made the mistake of staying at a terrible job for almost a month thinking it would get better, and by then UC said I had accepted "the conditions by" continuing to work there. The written resignation with specific details about misrepresentation is key. Also, if anyone has the original job posting saved or screenshots of it, that can be super helpful evidence too since employers sometimes change their online postings after hiring.
One thing that hasn't been mentioned yet is that PA UC will sometimes do what's called a "fact-finding interview" over the phone before making their initial decision. Don't be surprised if they call you within a week or two of reporting that you quit - they'll ask detailed questions about exactly what happened and why you left. Be honest and stick to the facts about how the job differed from what was promised. Also, if your employer tries to claim you were fired instead of quit (to avoid paying into the UC system), make sure you have evidence that you resigned voluntarily. I've seen cases where employers lie about the circumstances to avoid liability. Keep records of any texts, emails, or conversations about your resignation!
I'm in a similar boat but with a different school role - I was a substitute teacher last year and filed in June too. My claim has been stuck for over 6 weeks now with the same school district issue. What's really frustrating is that subs don't have ANY guarantee of work for the next year, yet they still treat us like we have "reasonable assurance." I've tried calling probably 100 times with no luck getting through. Reading all these responses is actually helpful though - sounds like most people do eventually get approved, it just takes way longer than it should. I'm definitely going to try that live chat option tomorrow at 8am and maybe contact my state rep too. This whole process is such a mess but at least we're not alone in dealing with it!
You're absolutely right about substitutes not having any guarantee! That's even more frustrating than my coaching situation because at least I knew I could reapply for my position. Subs literally have zero assurance of getting called in. It's ridiculous that PA UC treats all school employees the same way regardless of our actual job security. I'm definitely going to try the 8am live chat tomorrow too - maybe if enough of us keep pushing they'll realize how broken this system is for seasonal/substitute school workers. Good luck getting through!
I was a bus driver for our school district and went through this same nightmare last summer! The "reasonable assurance" rule is so unfair for those of us in non-teaching roles. What really helped my case was getting a letter from HR at the school district explicitly stating that my position was seasonal with no guarantee of rehire. I had to be pretty persistent with the district office to get that letter, but it made all the difference when the examiner finally reviewed my claim. Also, I found that filing an appeal right away (even before they make a decision) can sometimes speed up the initial review process because it shows you're serious about fighting it. Took about 7 weeks total but I did get approved with full back pay. Don't give up!
Hey Sofia! I just went through this exact situation in February and wanted to share my timeline. My employer also no-showed for my PA UC appeal hearing, and I was worried about the same things. Here's what happened in my case: - Decision letter arrived 11 days after my hearing (including one weekend) - Payment processed 5 business days after the decision was posted online - I got the full backpay amount in one lump sum (about $3,200 in my case) The no-show definitely helped my case, but like others mentioned, the referee still reviewed all the documentation carefully. Make sure you have everything organized - wage stubs, termination letter, any emails or texts related to your separation. One thing I wish someone had told me: double-check that your direct deposit info is still current in your account. Mine had expired and I didn't realize it until after I won, which delayed my payment by another week while they reissued it. Keep filing those weekly claims and try to stay patient. I know it's stressful when you're counting on that money, but it sounds like you have a strong case. Good luck!
Thanks for sharing your experience Oliver! That's really helpful to know about the direct deposit info potentially expiring. I just logged in to double-check mine and it looks like it's still active, but I'm glad you mentioned that - would have been so frustrating to have another delay after already waiting so long. 11 days for the decision sounds reasonable, and getting the full backpay in one shot is exactly what I'm hoping for. Did you have any issues with the payment amount being correct, or did they calculate everything accurately including the waiting week?
I went through almost the identical situation back in November! My employer was a complete no-show to my PA UC appeal hearing and I was sweating bullets about the same timeline questions you have. Here's what happened in my case: - Got my decision letter exactly 10 business days after the hearing - Payment hit my account 3 days after the decision showed "approved" online - Received all $5,100+ of backpay in one deposit (with taxes withheld as I had selected) The employer not showing definitely worked in my favor, but the referee still asked me tons of detailed questions and wanted to see all my documentation. Make sure you have copies of everything - your termination paperwork, any correspondence with your employer, etc. One heads up: when you do get paid, PA UC sends a separate letter breaking down exactly how they calculated your backpay. Don't panic if the math looks confusing at first - they include waiting weeks, partial weeks, and all sorts of adjustments that can make it hard to follow. Also, keep checking your dashboard obsessively like the rest of us! The status usually updates there 1-2 days before you get the physical decision letter. Hang in there - sounds like you've got a solid case with them not even bothering to show up!
UPDATE: I finally got through to Money Network this morning! For anyone else having this problem - ask specifically for "reduced fraud monitoring" on your account. Apparently they can set different security levels and mine was on the highest for some reason. Also found out my app login issues were because I was trying too many times without realizing it (kept hitting login thinking it didn't go through). They reset everything and so far it's working! Thanks everyone for your help!!
Wow, reading through all these responses is both frustrating and reassuring - frustrating that so many people are dealing with this same issue, but reassuring that there are actually solutions! I've been having the exact same problem for weeks and couldn't figure out what was triggering it. My card locked yesterday while I was trying to buy groceries and I had to abandon my cart because I couldn't access any of my benefits. The cashier looked at me like I was trying to scam them or something - so embarrassing! I'm definitely going to try calling during those specific times Muhammad mentioned and ask for the "reduced fraud monitoring" that Christian got. Has anyone else noticed if certain stores or types of purchases are more likely to trigger the lockouts? Mine seems to happen most often at gas stations for some reason.
I feel you on the embarrassment factor! Same thing happened to me at Target last month - card declined, had to leave everything behind while other customers stared. From what I've seen in these comments and my own experience, gas stations seem to be the biggest trigger. I think it's because they often do a pre-authorization hold first, then process the actual charge, and Money Network's system sees that as suspicious activity. Grocery stores can also trigger it if you use the card for a large purchase after not using it for a few days. The "unusual spending pattern" thing is so sensitive it's almost useless. Definitely try calling during those time windows - and make sure to mention both the card AND app issues if you have them. Good luck!

Congrats on getting your first payment! This is such a common worry for new UC recipients. I went through the exact same panic when I started - kept refreshing my bank account every hour! The 2-3 day delay after the portal shows "processed" is totally standard. Pro tip: once you get into the weekly rhythm, you'll know exactly when to expect your deposits. Usually mine come on the same day each week now. Hope things get easier for you from here!

•Thanks for the encouragement! It's so reassuring to hear that this anxiety is normal for new people. I definitely was refreshing my bank account way too much yesterday! Looking forward to getting into that predictable weekly rhythm you mentioned - it'll be nice to know what to expect instead of worrying every time.

So glad to see your update that the money came through! This is exactly why I always tell people to wait at least 3-4 business days before panicking. PA's system is slow but usually reliable once you understand the timing. For future reference, I've noticed my payments typically follow this pattern: file Sunday night, portal updates Tuesday with payment date, money hits my account Thursday or Friday. It becomes much less stressful once you know what to expect each week!
