yeah unemployment is taxable learned that the hard way last year... definitely set aside money if you can afford to
This is so stressful! I thought unemployment was supposed to help people, not create more financial problems. Why don't they explain this better when you first apply? I've been getting benefits for 4 months and nobody told me about the tax implications. Now I'm going to owe thousands of dollars that I don't have!
yeah i quit my retail job last month and got denied right away... apparently being scheduled for impossible hours doesnt count as good cause according to NYS Department of Labor even though I couldnt find childcare
This reminds me of when I had to leave my job because they moved locations and I couldn't commute that far. NYS Department of Labor approved my claim because it was considered a substantial change in working conditions. Every situation is different though - the adjudication process really looks at the specific details of why you quit.
If you're having trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor to clarify this stuff, I found this service called Claimyr that actually gets you connected to a real agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. I used it when I was confused about my partial payments and got answers right away instead of being on hold forever. Check out claimyr.com - way easier than trying to call the regular number.
The whole partial credit system is actually pretty fair once you understand it. I've been working 2 days a week at my old job while collecting unemployment and it helps me stay afloat while I look for full-time work. Just keep track of all your earnings and report them accurately on your weekly certification.
I had trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor when I needed to check on my claim status after a similar situation. If you run into issues reaching them by phone, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get connected to an actual agent. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI. Made the whole process so much easier when I needed to explain my job separation circumstances.

One thing to keep in mind is the monetary requirements - you need to have earned enough wages during your base period to qualify for benefits. For 2025, you generally need at least $2,600 in one quarter of your base period AND total base period wages of at least 1.5 times your highest quarter. If you don't meet the regular base period requirements, they might be able to use an alternate base period that includes more recent wages.

•That's really helpful to know about the wage requirements. I should be fine since I worked full-time for over a year, but good to understand how they calculate it.

Don't forget you'll also need to be able to prove you're actively looking for work once you start collecting. The NYS Department of Labor requires you to make at least 3 job contacts per week and keep a record of your job search activities. They can ask to see your job search log at any time, so start keeping track from day one!
