I've been trying to get through to NYS Department of Labor for weeks to ask about my benefit calculation and the phone lines are always busy. Has anyone found a way to actually talk to someone there? I keep getting disconnected after waiting on hold forever.
I had the same problem with getting through to NYS Department of Labor agents. I ended up using a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that gets you connected faster. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Saved me hours of trying to call myself and I was able to get my questions answered about my benefit amount.
The percentage thing is misleading because of the weekly cap. I was making good money before I got laid off and my unemployment is way less than 50% of my salary. The system is designed to help lower income workers more than higher earners. Just something to keep in mind when budgeting.
The whole system is frustrating honestly. Even when it's OBVIOUSLY not your fault they still make you jump through hoops. I got laid off due to budget cuts and they still questioned me about it during the phone interview.
I had trouble reaching anyone at NYS Department of Labor for weeks about my adjudication status. Finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have this video demo (https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI) that shows how it works. Made the whole process way less stressful when I could actually talk to someone who could see my case details.
I think natural disasters count too? My cousin lost her job when that hurricane damaged their office building last year and she got approved really quickly.
ugh the same thing happened to my cousin except they said she quit when she was actually fired for no reason... like how do they even get this stuff wrong?? makes no sense
Definitely appeal this! The NYS Department of Labor makes mistakes all the time with employer reporting. I work in HR and I've seen employers accidentally check the wrong box on forms or misunderstand what constitutes a layoff vs termination. Your documentation should clear this up easily at the hearing.
If you're having trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor to get specifics about your claim, I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me through to a real person. They have this video demo (https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI) that shows how it works. Saved me hours of trying to call and getting busy signals. Sometimes you just need to talk to someone who can look up your exact wage history and give you the real numbers.
Wait so is the benefit amount based on gross or net pay? And what if I had multiple jobs - do they count all of them or just the main one?

wait so they take money out of our paychecks for this but then make us jump through hoops to actually get it?? that seems messed up

@previous poster - the requirements exist to make sure the system isn't abused and that people are genuinely trying to get back to work. It's not perfect but it does help millions of people who genuinely need temporary assistance between jobs.
