I work in HR and we had to lay off 80 people last month. The NYS Department of Labor told us to expect delays because they're seeing claim volumes 40% higher than normal in our region. They said to tell employees to be patient but keep filing weekly.
I had so much trouble getting through to someone at NYS Department of Labor to ask questions like this. Spent hours calling and either got busy signals or hung up on. Finally used claimyr.com to get connected to an actual agent - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. The agent was able to explain exactly how my benefits would be classified for different programs.
The system is so broken that half the people who should be getting benefits can't even get through to file their claims properly. I've been trying to reach someone at NYS Department of Labor for weeks about my adjudication status. The real number of people who NEED unemployment is way higher than what's reported.
If you're having trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor by phone, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals.
omg same situation here! lost my retail job right after Christmas when sales dropped. the store manager kept talking about 'seasonal adjustments' and 'cyclical patterns' but honestly who cares what they call it when you still can't pay rent lol. just keep filing your weekly claims on time every week and do your job search requirements.
The NYS Department of Labor system is so frustrating with all these confusing terms everywhere! They make everything sound so complicated when really you just lost your job and need benefits. I spent hours reading through their website trying to understand every little detail and it just stressed me out more. As long as you're not quitting voluntarily or getting fired for misconduct, you should be fine for regular UI benefits regardless of whether economists call your job loss 'cyclical' or whatever.

I had similar confusion when dealing with NYS Department of Labor representatives about my claim status. If you need to speak with someone directly about your specific situation, I found a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Really saved me hours of trying to call the regular NYS Department of Labor number.

•Thanks for the suggestion! I might need that if I run into issues with my weekly claims.

THE WHOLE TAX SYSTEM IS SO CONFUSING!!! Why don't they teach this stuff in school? I've been working for 10 years and still learning new things about how unemployment works. At least now I know my employer was doing things correctly.
