Was a bit nervous or untrusting at first, but my calls went thru. First time the wait was a bit long but their customer chat line on their page was helpful and put me at ease that I would receive my call. wait so you CAN get unemployment if you quit?? i thought that was impossible. my job has been cutting everyone's hours too but i assumed i was stuck there
Yes, but it's not automatic. You need to meet specific criteria for 'good cause' and the burden of proof is on you. Significant reduction in hours or changes to working conditions can qualify, but you typically need to show you tried to resolve it with your employer first and that a reasonable person would have quit under those circumstances.

ugh this form is SO confusing!! why does the NYS Department of Labor make it so complicated??? I've started it like 3 times and keep getting different error messages. Do I really need ALL my employers from the past year and a half?? what if I can't remember exact start dates from my part time job last spring?
Yes, you need all employers from the base period. If you can't remember exact dates, check old tax documents, bank deposits, or contact the employer's HR department. Incomplete information will delay your claim.
Been through this process twice now with NYS Department of Labor. Pro tip - save your application as you go because the system times out. Also double check that your bank routing number is correct for direct deposit. I made a typo and had to wait weeks for a paper check.
Good point about saving! Is there a way to save a draft or do I need to complete it all at once?

The NYS Department of Labor system is so confusing with all these calculations! I still don't understand why my benefit amount was lower than I expected even though I made good money.
It could be because they use your base period wages, not your most recent wages. The base period is usually the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you filed.

The whole system is broken. I've been waiting 9 weeks for my determination and they won't tell me ANYTHING. Meanwhile bills keep coming and they act like we don't exist. NYS Department of Labor is completely overwhelmed but won't admit it.
I feel your frustration but 9 weeks does seem unusually long. Have you tried requesting a supervisor callback through the online messaging system?

I've been trying to reach the NYS Department of Labor for weeks about my benefits getting stopped and their phone system is impossible. Has anyone found a way to actually talk to a human being there? I need to understand why my payments stopped but can't get through to anyone.

Just want to add that unemployment benefits in NY also come with job search requirements. You need to make at least 3 job contacts per week and keep a log of your search activities. The NYS Department of Labor can ask to see this log at any time. Benefits aren't just free money - there are responsibilities that come with them.
