I'm trying to understand how the unemployment system works since I just filed my first claim with NYS Department of Labor. When I was working, I noticed federal unemployment taxes being taken from my paychecks along with state taxes. Where exactly do these federal unemployment taxes get sent to? Does it affect my weekly claim certification or benefit amount? I'm confused about how the federal vs state funding works for unemployment benefits in New York.

I'm really confused about whether I qualify for unemployment benefits through NYS Department of Labor. I worked part-time at a retail store for about 8 months before they cut my hours down to basically nothing (like 6 hours a week). I quit because I couldn't pay my bills with that little income. My friend said I might still qualify since it was basically a constructive dismissal? I made around $18,000 last year between that job and some freelance work. I'm 24 and this would be my first time filing for unemployment. Can someone help me understand if I have a case or if quitting automatically disqualifies me? I really need some income while I look for something full-time.

Don't let them intimidate you! I've been fighting the unemployment system for months over a disqualification that made no sense. File anyway and make them prove you don't qualify. The worst thing that happens is they say no, then you appeal. At least you'll have your claim in the system.

Just to clarify - the 26 weeks is the standard maximum, but your actual duration might be less depending on your earnings history. NYS Department of Labor looks at your base period wages to determine both your weekly benefit amount and total duration. If you didn't work much in your base period, you might not qualify for the full 26 weeks.

Why is my unemployment claim disqualified - NYS Department of Labor never explained

Got a notice two days ago saying my unemployment claim is disqualified but there's literally no explanation anywhere. I've been filing my weekly claims for 6 weeks and everything seemed fine until this notice showed up. My ny.gov account just shows 'disqualified' with zero details about what I supposedly did wrong. I reported all my work correctly, did my job search requirements, answered all the questions honestly. Has anyone else dealt with this? How do you even find out WHY you're disqualified when they don't tell you anything?

ugh the NYS Department of Labor is THE WORST at communicating anything!! they just send these vague notices and expect you to figure it out yourself. I went through something similar and it took 3 months to get it resolved
