One thing they don't tell you upfront - you have to actively search for work and keep a log of your job search activities. NYS Department of Labor requires you to make at least 3 job contacts per week and you might get audited to prove you're looking for work. Keep detailed records of where you applied, when, and any responses you got.
Oh wow, I didn't know about the job search requirement. Is there a specific format for keeping track of this?
@Natasha Petrov - I went through this exact same situation about 6 months ago when I got laid off from my restaurant job. The whole process seemed overwhelming at first, but it's really not that bad once you break it down. Besides what Connor mentioned, also have your W-2 from last year ready and any separation paperwork your employer gave you (like a layoff notice). One tip that really helped me - call the NYS Department of Labor customer service line early in the morning (like 8:05 AM) right when they open. You'll have a much better chance of getting through than calling later in the day. The wait times can be brutal but if you have specific questions, talking to a real person helps a lot. Good luck!
Anyone else notice that scammers seem to be targeting people on specific days? I always get these fake texts on Mondays right after I certify my weekly benefits. Makes me think there's some kind of data breach happening.
same!! i get them on mondays too right after certifying. that cant be a coincidence
I get them on Thursdays which is when my payment usually hits my account 😳
This is such an important warning - thank you for posting this! I almost fell for a similar scam last week. Got a text saying my benefits were "under review" and I needed to update my direct deposit info within 24 hours or my payments would stop. The panic made me almost click the link before I caught myself. It's sick how these scammers know exactly how to push our buttons when we're already stressed about money. Everyone please share this with family/friends who might not be as aware of these tactics!
Just want to add that you should always answer the weekly questions honestly. I know someone who tried to game the system and ended up with an overpayment notice. The NYS Department of Labor takes fraud seriously and it's just not worth the risk.
Absolutely, I would never try to cheat the system. I just want to make sure I understand what they're asking for so I can answer correctly.
I went through the same thing when I first started filing! For job search activities, you definitely don't need to list every single application - just make sure you meet the minimum requirement (usually 3 activities per week). Keep a simple log with the date, company name, position, and method of contact. Screenshots aren't required but I'd recommend saving confirmation emails from job sites when you apply. Networking absolutely counts as a work search activity - just document who you spoke with and when. The most important thing is to file your weekly certification on time, even if you're not 100% sure about every detail. You can always call the DOL for clarification, and it's better to file on time than to miss the deadline while trying to get everything perfect.
Just to follow up - were you able to get through to anyone? Did your payment show up? Hoping you got it sorted out before rent was due!
Yes! I used that Claimyr service you recommended and got connected to an agent yesterday. They said there was a random system flag on my account for verification, but since I got through to someone, they were able to remove the hold and process my payment. It should arrive tomorrow. Thanks for the recommendation - saved me a ton of stress!
So glad you got it resolved! I'm dealing with a similar situation right now - claimed on Sunday and still no payment showing up in my history. Reading through all these responses has been really helpful. I'm going to try calling early tomorrow morning like Mei suggested, and if that doesn't work I'll check out the Claimyr service. It's reassuring to know that these random system flags are somewhat common and can usually be cleared up once you actually talk to someone. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences!

I'm going through the exact same thing right now - filed in December and been in adjudication for about 10 days due to a separation issue. The uncertainty is definitely stressful when you're counting on those payments. From what I'm reading here it sounds like 3-4 weeks is pretty typical, which gives me some hope. I've been continuing to file my weekly claims like others suggested. Has anyone had success with the secure messaging system on the NY.gov website for getting updates? I haven't tried that yet but might be worth a shot if calling isn't working.

•I tried the secure messaging system about a week ago but haven't gotten a response yet. It might be worth trying since it's another avenue, but don't expect a quick turnaround. At least with messaging you have a written record of your inquiry. The waiting really is the hardest part - I keep checking my account obsessively hoping to see some movement. Hang in there, sounds like we're both in the same boat timing-wise.
