Was a bit nervous or untrusting at first, but my calls went thru. First time the wait was a bit long but their customer chat line on their page was helpful and put me at ease that I would receive my call. The only thing that's 'bad' about collecting unemployment is how hard they make it sometimes! The NYS Department of Labor system can be confusing and the phone lines are always busy. But morally? Ethically? You're using a program you paid into. That's like feeling bad about using your car insurance after an accident. Don't let anyone make you feel guilty for using benefits you're entitled to.

The $7,000 wage base is what trips people up. It's per employee per year, not total payroll. So if you have 3 employees making $50,000 each, you only pay FUTA on the first $7,000 of each person's wages, not on their full salaries.

The NYS Department of Labor system is so broken honestly. They make it impossible to get help and then wonder why people are frustrated. I was terminated 6 months ago and went through the whole appeal process - it's a nightmare but I eventually won. Just be prepared for a fight if your employer contests your claim.

Wait I thought if you get fired you can't get unemployment at all? This is confusing because my friend told me you only get benefits if you get laid off...
That's a common misconception! You can get unemployment benefits after being terminated as long as it wasn't for misconduct. Layoffs, terminations for performance, and even some firings can qualify you for benefits.

File immediately! Even if there's a dispute about whether you quit or were fired, you want to get your claim in the system. NYS Department of Labor will sort out the details during adjudication. Don't let your employer's paperwork scare you - they probably did that to try to avoid paying unemployment insurance. Happens all the time unfortunately.
