Was a bit nervous or untrusting at first, but my calls went thru. First time the wait was a bit long but their customer chat line on their page was helpful and put me at ease that I would receive my call. Unfortunately no, that's correct. Benefits only start from the week you file your claim. It's designed to encourage people to file immediately when they become unemployed rather than waiting.

WIC might help too if you have young kids. And some grocery stores have programs for people on government benefits. Also make sure you're doing your weekly certifications on time with NYS Department of Labor so you don't miss any payments!
Have you tried talking to your caseworker about emergency assistance? Sometimes there are one-time grants available for people experiencing food insecurity while on unemployment. Not sure if NYS Department of Labor has those programs but worth asking.
I didn't know there were caseworkers for unemployment? I thought you just filed online and that was it.
Regular unemployment doesn't have caseworkers like welfare programs do. But you can call NYS Department of Labor if you're having specific hardship issues.

Wait did you quit or get laid off? You said both in your post. If you quit voluntarily you definitely won't qualify unless it was for good cause like unsafe working conditions or harassment.
I got laid off! They cut staff because business was slow. I never quit. That's why I'm so confused about them saying I quit voluntarily.

dont quit!!! make them fire you instead. just stop showing up for the shifts you cant work and let them terminate you. then you can claim unemployment no problem. thats what i did when my boss was being unreasonable

•That's terrible advice. If you deliberately don't show up for scheduled shifts, that's considered misconduct and you'll be disqualified from unemployment benefits anyway. NYS Department of Labor will see right through that strategy.
