Filed twice in the past year unfortunately - once in February 2024 and again in November when I got laid off AGAIN. Second time was definitely faster, maybe because I was already in their system? Both times had to do the job search log which is annoying but not too bad if you stay on top of it.
I was worried about this exact thing when I was dealing with a stuck claim that wouldn't process. Couldn't get through to anyone at NYS Department of Labor for weeks to ask questions. Finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to a real person who explained everything about reporting requirements and what could affect my benefits. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Made such a difference to actually talk to someone who knew the rules.
They also check with the IRS and state tax records. Plus if you file taxes next year and report income during a period when you claimed you weren't working, that's gonna raise red flags. The databases all talk to each other now so there's really no way to hide employment anymore.
Wait so there's really no waiting period at all? I thought you had to prove you were actively looking for work for at least a week or something. The whole system is so confusing, I put off applying for like 3 weeks when I got fired thinking I had to wait!

This is really important data to have. In my experience working with unemployment cases, women of color, especially Black women and Latinas, face disproportionately high unemployment rates in NY. The intersectionality of race and gender creates additional barriers. NYS Department of Labor should have this broken down in their annual reports, but you might need to dig through several years of data to establish patterns for your case.

•That makes sense about the intersectionality aspect. I'll look for the annual reports. Do you know if NYS Department of Labor publishes these quarterly or just annually?

•I understand the frustration, but NYS Department of Labor does actually maintain pretty detailed demographic data. It's required for federal reporting. The challenge is usually accessing it in a format that's useful for individual cases.
