Was a bit nervous or untrusting at first, but my calls went thru. First time the wait was a bit long but their customer chat line on their page was helpful and put me at ease that I would receive my call. I just lost my job last week after working for the same company for 2 years. My manager said it was due to budget cuts and they had to let go of several people. I've never filed for unemployment before and honestly have no idea where to start. How can you get unemployment benefits in New York? Do I need to apply right away or can I wait a few days? What documents do I need and how long does the whole process take? I'm really stressed about paying my bills next month.

Just went through this process myself last month. The whole thing took about 6 weeks from filing to getting my first payment. Had to deal with identity verification which added extra time. Make sure you file your weekly claims on time every week even if your initial claim is still pending - you can't go back and file late weeks.

Is child support deducted from unemployment benefits in NY - NYS Department of Labor question

I just got approved for unemployment benefits through NYS Department of Labor and I'm wondering if they automatically deduct child support payments from my weekly benefits? I pay $320 per week in child support and my unemployment benefit is $504 per week. Will the full amount go to my ex or do they take a percentage? I can't find clear info on the my.ny.gov website about this.

Why has unemployment decreased - will this affect my NYS Department of Labor benefits?

I've been hearing on the news that unemployment rates have gone down significantly this year. I'm currently receiving regular UI benefits and have been for about 8 weeks now. Does anyone know if declining unemployment numbers will impact my claim or make it harder to get extensions? I'm worried the NYS Department of Labor might start cutting people off earlier if they think there are more jobs available. My adjudication just cleared last month and I don't want any new complications.

The job search requirements might get stricter though. When I was on unemployment a few years ago during a good economy, they were really strict about the 3 job contacts per week. Now with lower unemployment, the NYS Department of Labor might crack down more on people not actively looking. Make sure you're documenting everything properly in your job search log.

NYS Department of Labor unemployment overpayment - will they take my tax refund if I owe money?

I just found out I owe the NYS Department of Labor around $2,800 from an overpayment they say happened last year. I'm supposed to start paying it back but honestly can't afford much right now. My question is - if I owe unemployment money, will they automatically take my state tax refund when I file? I'm expecting about $1,200 back this year and really need that money for bills. Has anyone dealt with this before? Do they intercept your refund or do I have time to work out a payment plan first?

Wait, can they take federal refunds too or just state? I owe money but most of my refund comes from federal taxes.

I totally agree it's frustrating, but usually overpayments happen when there's new information they didn't have initially - like unreported work or an employer contest. Still doesn't make it any easier to deal with financially.

As long as you respond to NYS Department of Labor within the timeframe they give you (usually 10 days), you should be fine. The key is being honest about the separation reason. Layoffs due to lack of work are pretty standard and shouldn't cause any issues with the claims.
