Hey OP, just curious - what's your reason for taking leave? Different reasons can have different rules and timeframes.
I'm actually looking into it for future planning. My partner and I are thinking about starting a family soon, so I want to understand my options now.
That's awesome that you're planning ahead! I did the same thing and it really helped when the time came. One thing I wish I had known earlier is that you need to have been paying into SDI for at least 5-10 months before you can claim benefits, so make sure you check your paystubs to see if SDI is being deducted. Also, if you're planning for maternity leave, look into whether your employer offers any additional benefits on top of PFL - some companies will top off your pay or let you use vacation time to make up the difference since PFL only covers about 60-70% of your wages. Good luck with your family planning journey! 🍀
This is such great advice! I had no idea about the SDI payment requirement - definitely going to check my paystubs now. The employer benefits tip is really smart too. Did you find it easy to coordinate everything when you actually took your leave?
Thanks @Emma Anderson for sharing all that detail! The SDI payment requirement is definitely something I need to look into. Quick question - do you know if there s'a way to check how long you ve'been paying into SDI online, or do you have to go through old paystubs? Also, when you coordinated with your employer, did you give them a heads up months in advance or wait until closer to when you actually needed the leave?
Hey OP, just a heads up - I had a similar issue last year and it turned out there was a system-wide update happening. It took about a week for everything to show up correctly. Might be worth waiting a few days before you panic. Good luck!
Oh no, this is so frustrating! 😤 I'm actually going through the exact same thing right now - submitted my PFL application last week and it's nowhere to be found on the website even though I have the confirmation number. It's like it vanished into thin air! I've been checking obsessively every day hoping it'll magically appear. At least I'm not the only one dealing with this mess. The EDD system really needs a major overhaul. Hope we both get this sorted out soon! 🤞
OMG yes! Finally someone else going through the exact same thing! 😭 I was starting to think I was losing my mind. It's so weird that we both have confirmation numbers but nothing shows up online. Maybe there really is some kind of system glitch happening right now? Have you tried calling yet? I'm dreading it but sounds like that might be our only option to figure out what's going on.
Hate to say it, but sometimes you just gotta keep calling. I literally called 137 times in one day before I got through. It's exhausting but eventually it'll work.
This is so frustrating but unfortunately pretty common with EDD right now. A few things that might help: try calling the 2511 number instead of the main line - sometimes it has shorter wait times. Also, if you have any documentation from when you first filed (confirmation numbers, emails, etc.), keep those handy when you do get through. The rep will need them to locate your "missing" claim. Sometimes claims get flagged for review and temporarily disappear from your online portal, but they're still in the system. Don't panic - your claim isn't actually gone, it's just not visible to you right now. Keep us updated on how it goes!
Pro tip: if you can't get through on the main line, try calling right when they open or just before they close. Sometimes you can catch em off guard lol
Been in a similar situation before! The wrong end date thing is actually pretty common - when you get through to someone, just explain it was an input error and have your correct dates ready. For the 4-day payment issue, that could be because they're only counting weekdays or there might be a waiting period applied. Ask them to show you exactly how they calculated it and if there are any penalties or waiting periods affecting your payment. Also, don't be afraid to ask for a supervisor if the first person can't help - sometimes you need someone with more system access to fix date issues.

Just went through this exact same situation last month! The irregular payment schedule is so stressful when you're trying to plan finances with a newborn. Like others mentioned, the SDI portal is definitely where you need to look - not the regular UI system. One thing that helped me was calling the EDD disability line (not the unemployment line) at 1-800-480-3287. They were actually more helpful than the regular EDD number for PFL questions. Also, I noticed that if you recently submitted any additional paperwork or if your employer was slow to respond to their verification requests, that can cause those random payment delays. Keep certifying every two weeks even when payments seem weird - they'll catch up with backpay once everything processes. The whole system is confusing but you'll get through it!

•Thank you for sharing that phone number! I had no idea there was a separate disability line for PFL questions. That explains why I kept getting transferred around when I called the main EDD number. I'm definitely going to try calling 1-800-480-3287 if I run into any more issues. It's such a relief to know that the irregular payments and delays are actually normal - EDD really needs to do a better job explaining this process to new parents. The stress of not knowing when money will arrive while you're caring for a newborn is just unnecessary anxiety on top of everything else!

I'm going through this exact same thing right now with my PFL claim! Got one random payment last week with zero explanation of what weeks it covered, and now nothing this week even though I certified. It's so frustrating trying to figure out your finances when you have no idea when the next payment is coming or what it's even for. Reading through all these responses has been super helpful - I had no idea there was a separate SDI portal for PFL vs the regular UI system. Going to log into the SDI portal right now and see if I can find my payment breakdown there. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences, it makes me feel less crazy for being so confused by this whole process!

•You're definitely not crazy - the whole PFL system is so confusing! I just went through this same thing a few months ago and felt completely lost too. The SDI portal really is a game changer once you find it. When you log in, look for that "View Payment Activity" section that Diego mentioned earlier - it saved my sanity! Also don't stress too much about the irregular timing, it seems like that's just how EDD processes PFL payments unfortunately. Keep certifying every two weeks no matter what, and everything should eventually catch up. Hang in there! 💙
