Was a bit nervous or untrusting at first, but my calls went thru. First time the wait was a bit long but their customer chat line on their page was helpful and put me at ease that I would receive my call. Quick tip - make sure your address is updated with Washington ESD or your benefit payments might get delayed. Learned that the hard way when I moved apartments.

Yeah it held up my payments for two weeks while they verified my new address. Such a pain.
The whole benefit calculation seems designed to be confusing on purpose. Like they don't want people to know how much they're entitled to. At least this thread helped me understand it better!

Great discussion! One more thing to add - the unemployment insurance system is entirely separate from workers' compensation. UI covers job loss, workers' comp covers workplace injuries. Both are paid by employers but they're completely different programs.
Good clarification! I was wondering about that distinction.
And neither one comes out of employee paychecks in Washington state, which is nice.
Thanks for starting this thread! I learned a lot about how the whole system works. It's actually pretty fair when you understand that employers pay in and get rated based on how many claims they generate.
Agreed! I feel much better about collecting benefits now that I understand it's not coming from some general tax fund.

One last tip - if your claim gets complicated for any reason, don't panic. Washington ESD has processes for appeals and hearings if you disagree with their decisions. Most claims go through fine but it's good to know you have options if something goes wrong.
Hopefully I won't need to worry about appeals, but good to know they exist.
Right - most people never need to appeal. But having that safety net is reassuring.
Just to wrap up - file as soon as possible, have your employment history ready, be accurate with your separation reason, and don't forget to file weekly claims once you're approved. You'll do fine!

Final update from me - claim approved after exactly 6 weeks! Got all my back pay and regular payments have resumed. There is light at the end of the tunnel for those still waiting.
Congrats! Was there anything specific that seemed to speed up the final approval?
Not really, I think it just worked its way through their system. The adjudicator called me on a Friday and by Monday my claim was approved.
For anyone still struggling to get through by phone, I second the recommendation for Claimyr. Used them last month when I was stuck in adjudication and they got me connected to an agent who explained exactly what Washington ESD needed from me. Worth every penny to end the uncertainty.
