Quick tip for anyone facing disqualification: Start looking for work immediately even while appealing. Washington ESD requires active job search during the appeal process, and if you win your appeal, you'll need to show you were available and searching the whole time to get back benefits.
The most frustrating part about Washington unemployment disqualifications is how vague the initial notices are. They'll say 'misconduct' but not explain exactly what you supposedly did wrong. You have to dig deeper through appeals or phone calls to get the actual details of their decision.
Exactly! And good luck getting someone on the phone to explain it. The whole system seems designed to discourage people from pursuing their rightful benefits.
That's where services like Claimyr really help - they cut through the phone system nonsense and actually get you connected to someone who can give you real answers about your specific case.
Form 940 is actually one of the easier tax forms once you understand it. The hard part is just keeping track of the payment timing throughout the year.
One last tip - keep good records of all your Washington ESD payments throughout the year. You'll need those amounts when you file Form 940 to calculate your credit. Makes the year-end filing much smoother.
Good point, I'll make sure to save all those payment confirmations. Thanks everyone for all the help - this thread has been incredibly useful!
Glad we could help! And seriously, if you ever need to actually talk to someone at the IRS or Washington ESD about any of this stuff, check out that Claimyr service I mentioned. Game changer for getting through government phone systems.
I had issues with my benefit calculation and spent hours trying to reach Washington ESD by phone. Finally used Claimyr to get through and they were able to fix the error in my base period wages. The agent explained that a previous employer had reported my wages incorrectly. Without being able to actually talk to someone, I never would have gotten that resolved.
Also remember that unemployment benefits are temporary - there's a maximum number of weeks you can collect. In Washington it's typically 26 weeks of regular unemployment, though that can be extended during economic downturns. Plan accordingly and use the time to actively job search.
Hang in there OP. I know the waiting is stressful but most claims do get approved eventually. The system is slow but it works... eventually.
Final update from me - got my payment this morning! Ended up being exactly 3 weeks from when I first filed. All the back weeks came through at once. There's hope!

honestly the waiting is the worst part. try not to stress too much about things you can't control. if you file everything correctly and on time, you should be fine

Last piece of advice - if you need to reach Washington ESD by phone and keep getting disconnected, that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier really does work. I was skeptical but ended up using it when I had issues with my weekly claim certification.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already broke from being unemployed.

•It's worth checking out their website for current info. For me, getting through to resolve my issue quickly was worth it versus losing weeks of benefits.
