This thread has been really helpful. I'm in a similar boat and had no idea about the W-2 employment angle.
Don't forget to also look into other resources like your local WorkSource office. Even if you don't qualify for benefits, they might have job training programs or other assistance.
For what it's worth, I tried calling Washington ESD about this same question and finally got through using Claimyr. The agent was really helpful and even emailed me some information about maintaining benefits while living out of state.
If you run into any issues with Washington ESD during your claim - like adjudication delays or confusing determinations - that Claimyr service mentioned earlier really works. I was skeptical at first but it saved me so much time and stress when my claim got flagged for some random review.
Bottom line: 26 weeks maximum, file your weekly claims on time, keep looking for work, document everything. That's the basics you need to know. Good luck with your job search!
Just want to echo what others said about calling if you need clarification. I know Claimyr has been mentioned a few times but it really does work for getting through to Washington ESD when you have complex questions that can't be answered online.
Thanks everyone for all the helpful info in this thread! As someone else who's pregnant and confused about benefits, this has been incredibly valuable. Good luck OP!

One more tip - take screenshots of everything when you file your claim and keep records of all your job search activities. Having documentation helps if any questions come up later.

•Yes! I learned this the hard way when they asked me to verify some information months later and I couldn't remember the details.

You should be totally fine with a layoff claim. The key is just being honest and providing accurate information. Don't stress too much about it - thousands of people go through this process successfully every week in Washington state.
