One more thing - if you move to another state while collecting Washington unemployment, you can usually continue getting benefits but need to register with that state's workforce agency for job search requirements.
Thanks for posting this question! I just got approved too and was wondering the same things. This thread has been really helpful.
has anyone actually gotten through to washington esd recently to ask about current processing times? all this speculation is making me more anxious
For anyone still worried about this - I track economic data for work and Washington's unemployment metrics are all pretty stable right now. No major layoff announcements, no industry-wide disruptions, just normal economic activity. Your claim delays are likely just standard Washington ESD bureaucracy, not economic crisis.
Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who shared their experiences. It helps to know I'm not alone in dealing with this situation.
One thing I learned is to start preparing for benefit exhaustion well before it happens. Don't wait until the last minute to explore your options.
One more mention of Claimyr since people keep asking - they basically eliminate the waiting game with Washington ESD phone lines. Worth checking out if you're stuck like I was. The video demo explains it better than I can: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ
Final summary for anyone who finds this thread later: Washington ESD unemployment customer service is 800-318-6022. Call right at 8am when they open for the best chance of getting through. Have your SSN and claim info ready. Expect long wait times but don't give up!

Last resort - if you genuinely can't afford to pay it back and can't get it waived, bankruptcy might be an option. Unemployment overpayments can sometimes be discharged, though it's complicated and you'd need to talk to a bankruptcy attorney.

•Hopefully it won't come to that, but good to know it's a possibility if everything else fails.

Just wanted to add - if you do end up needing to speak with Washington ESD about this overpayment, definitely try Claimyr if the regular phone lines aren't working. I was skeptical at first but it actually worked for me when I had a similar issue. Got connected to an agent who could pull up my account and walk through exactly what triggered the overpayment notice.

•Thanks, I think I'm going to try that today. Getting through to an actual person seems like the fastest way to understand what's really going on with my case.
