This thread should be pinned - probably answers the most common question people have about dealing with Washington ESD. There are no walk-in offices, calling is nearly impossible, but services like Claimyr can actually get you through to an agent.
One last tip - if you do get through to Washington ESD (however you manage it), take notes during the call. Write down the agent's name, reference numbers, and exactly what they tell you. Makes follow-up much easier.
The weekly filing system actually makes sense when you think about it. Your employment situation can change week to week, so they need current information to determine if you're still eligible.
Make sure you keep records of everything - every job application, every weekly claim filing, all your documentation. If something goes wrong you'll need proof of what you did.
This whole thread should be pinned somewhere. So many people don't understand how the base period calculation works and end up accepting lower benefits than they qualify for.
Update #2: Got approved for alternate base period! My weekly benefit went from $180 to $412. They're also sending me back pay for the weeks I already certified. Huge relief!
Been collecting for 8 weeks now and still have 18 weeks left. The weekly claims are pretty easy once you get the hang of it. Just make sure you keep track of your job search activities for each week.
One more thing - your 26 weeks doesn't reset if you find a job and then get laid off again. You'd need to work enough to establish a new base period to get a fresh 26 weeks. So try to make them count!

Just wanted to add that Claimyr really does work for getting through to Washington ESD. I was skeptical at first but it saved me weeks of frustration. As for the 1930s, I think a lot of it was just bad timing - everything that could go wrong did go wrong at once.

•Thanks for the recommendation. And yeah, it was like a perfect storm of bad economic factors all hitting at once.

•Multiple system failures happening simultaneously. No single cause but everything amplified everything else.

Great discussion! It really puts our current Washington ESD problems in perspective. Yes the system is slow and frustrating, but at least we have something. People in the 1930s faced unemployment with zero safety net. That's terrifying.

•Absolutely. Complaining about Washington ESD delays seems petty compared to having no help at all.

•True, but we can still demand better. Just because it's better than nothing doesn't mean it's good enough.
