Just wanted to add that if your child support order changes while you're on unemployment, it can take a few weeks for Washington ESD to update their records. I had to call multiple times to get the new amount processed correctly.
One last tip about getting through to Washington ESD if you need to call them - I mentioned Claimyr earlier but wanted to add that they were especially helpful when I needed to speak to someone about my adjudication status. Their system knew exactly which department to route me to instead of me getting bounced around between different offices.
Bottom line - file your claim, be honest about everything, keep good records, and don't give up if you face any obstacles. The system is there to help people who lose their jobs through no fault of their own, which sounds like your situation.
Just wanted to add that even in low unemployment periods, people still lose jobs due to company closures, layoffs, seasonal work ending, etc. The individual circumstances matter way more than the overall economic picture.
Thanks everyone for helping me understand this better. I was definitely overthinking the economic angle when the real issue is just getting my layoff verified. I uploaded all my documentation this morning and I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
And if you don't hear anything in 2 weeks, definitely follow up. Sometimes things get stuck in the system.
Will do. If I can't get through by phone I'll try that Claimyr service you all mentioned.
The whole process seems scary at first but Washington ESD has actually improved their system a lot over the past few years. The online portal works pretty well most of the time.
Bottom line - you earned these benefits by working and paying into the system. File your claim ASAP and don't feel guilty about using a program you paid for. Good luck with your job search!
Thank you so much everyone! I feel way more confident about applying now. Going to start the process tonight.
You're welcome! And remember, if you run into any issues getting through to Washington ESD for help, Claimyr is there as a backup option. Made my whole experience much less stressful.

Last thing - keep checking your account regularly after you file. Sometimes Washington ESD needs additional information and they'll send you messages through the online system. Don't ignore those or your claim could get delayed or denied.

•Will they also send emails or letters, or just through the website?

•They'll usually send important stuff by mail too, but the online messaging system is faster. Check both regularly.
