Was a bit nervous or untrusting at first, but my calls went thru. First time the wait was a bit long but their customer chat line on their page was helpful and put me at ease that I would receive my call. The whole unemployment insurance system is such a mess though. Like why do they make the terminology so confusing? Half the time NYS Department of Labor uses different terms on different pages of their website. And don't even get me started on how long adjudication takes...
I agree the system could be clearer but at least the benefits are there when you need them. Better than having no safety net at all.

Wait, I thought you couldn't get unemployment if you were disabled? This is confusing me because my cousin said she couldn't apply for NYS Department of Labor benefits because she was on disability. Are there different rules for different types of disability benefits?
Your cousin might be thinking of SSI or already established SSDI benefits. If you're actively receiving SSDI, you generally can't also collect unemployment since SSDI means you can't work. But if you're just applying for SSDI while collecting unemployment, that's a gray area that needs careful handling.
The whole system is ridiculous if you ask me. You pay into unemployment insurance your whole working life and then they make you jump through hoops about every other benefit. Same with Social Security - you pay in for decades and then they act like they're doing you a favor. At least with NYS Department of Labor you can usually get your benefits without too much hassle, unlike trying to deal with federal agencies.

How does that work exactly? I've been trying to call NYS Department of Labor for two weeks about my adjudication status with no luck.

Structural unemployment is definitely the right term but like others said, just put layoff on your forms. I went through something similar when my company automated our entire accounting department. The good news is you should qualify for regular UI benefits since it wasn't due to misconduct or voluntary separation.

I get the frustration but honestly when you're waiting weeks for benefits and can't get through on your own, it's worth having options. The demo explains everything better than I can.
The whole system is a nightmare honestly. They make it so complicated on purpose to discourage people from filing. Just be prepared for lots of waiting and confusing forms.
I understand the frustration but the requirements exist for good reasons. Once you get through the initial process it's really not that bad if you stay on top of your weekly claims.

Your professor is testing basic macroeconomics knowledge. Cyclical unemployment moves with the business cycle - up during recessions, down during booms. The other types (structural, frictional, seasonal) have different patterns. Good luck with your class!
